MT75 extension
chasmon - 4/5/06 at 10:58 PM

My extension is pretty slopy not returning to neutral etc. and I've heard good things about the Westfield extension but its £240!!!

I can use CNC mill, manual lathe and welder so was thinking of making my own. Main difficulty is the actual pivot of the gearstick. Was thnking about maybe a rose joint but am concerned about it being to stiff.

The westy pivot looks like a sperical bearing (rose joint) anyway - and it won't be too stiff.

I’ve been thinking about this for a bit I am using the Mt75 box also.

Q1)
The engine and box will be on much stiffer mounts in the locost, so do you need that entire bracket?
Q2)
Any reason why you can not just mount the base of the lever to the chassis and run a rod to the box gear change?

Not runnig MT 75 , But I've ( Ok Marc ! ) have mounted the Sperical bearing strait to the Chassis witn no problems.

I used the sperical bearing from the BMW box I am using and extended the push sfaft so the gearstick and steering wheel line up.

Ps I would thinl that marc ( mnr ) would have the sperical bearing and the bearing holder off the shelf as they are used on the bottom arm on the Inboard suspension

If I was making one from scratch I would thread the gearstick through the sperical bearing so the 'throw' can be adjusted to drivers liking and then locked of.

Sorry to hijack this thread, Agriv8 you say that you are using BMW gearbox with RV8 is that a good/easy conversion I'm running through the options as I start to collect parts for my build. Any info would be welcome.

Big Wasa

In answer to Q2...that's what I'm doing, I've cut out the ball joint and surrounding plate from the original mount and will fit it to the tunnel.

You could do that, but it won't give very good feel as the pivot point will be moving with relation to the gearbox as the engine moves around. With very stiff engine mounts it may be ok though.

Was planning on running the sd1 box ( 1 of the 2 1/2 ) in the shed.

I was offered a BMW 635 CSI manual box for the right price these are rare .

Nothing againt the lt77 ( sd1 ) but between the two the short throw bmw box was going to win.

But it certainly isnt a cheep easy conversion the belhousing was John earles but requires a concentric release bearing we hoped to use the saab item bet this wont fit over the Input splines of the BMW box so an AP was used ( dont ask the cost ).

I would say there are easier boxses to fit

a rebuilt lt77 or r380 box would be an easiest route.

If you do go down the getrag route ( you need the getrag box with the ditachable bellhousing ) or a better option in my opinion would be Jag Getrag as i belive the input splines are smaller .

If I was doing it again I would go down the Jag route.

But all it all my setup is perfect flick rist positive dog leg gear change.

If you want further info PM me you email address with questions )

Oi quit the hijacking - Get orf my land (I'm from Gloucestershire). Only kidding

I'm really surprised this hasn't come up before on here. Good to know others are considering the same!

I think I'd like to mount the joint from the gearbox although I'd be interested to know details of peoples experiences with this.

I'm off to dissasemble half my suspension to geta rose joint to play with
