Piper 285 Cam

Hi All i have fitted a new 285 camshaft and used it for about 60 miles but it seems very noisy [ tappity ] i have re set the tappets but it is still noisy is this normal for hi lift cams ? . When sett ing the tappets i noticed if i put the feeler gauge at the bottom and set it to the right thicknes and then turn the cam 45% the gap gets bigger is this why they are noisey thanks all Graham
PS thats in a 2l pinto

Are you checking the gaps with the high point of the cam facing upright????

Valve clearance should be:
0.2mm inlet
0.25mm exhaust

Check with valve in fully closed position.

Strange the gaps getting bigger, 285 is quite a mild cam isnt it so not mega lift thought of valves contacting piston? may sound silly but there plenty of oil up there

Hi i canot see contact with valves to pistons down to the plug holes and there is lots of oil at the top of the engine i have 10 -40 seme sin oil in Graham

I've run a piper 285 on a pinto before and it certainly was noisier. This is the case for high lift cams - particually on a pinto as they're not that quiet at the cam anyway. An alloy cam cover and a loud exhaust helps

Conversely I ran a piper 285 years ago and it was quiet.

The noise is related partly to the shape of the cam followers, on a pinto these need to be good or they clack.

Also the heights of all the valve stem tops must be the same or the timing goes changes between cylinders !

If its very noisy then you may have got the springs that hold the followers down the wrong way around.

Probably obvious but did you change the cam followers? if so did you use the correct ones for the cam? Believe there may be some modified types to match cam ? also correctly fitted? Valve clearances adjusted when engine was cold? Are you adjusting the correct valve , not setting inlet to exhaust setting? I used to adjust pinto tappets with the cam pointing upwards but with a reground cam it may be worth setting the clearances with each piston at TDC on compression stroke . In that case turn engine over until timing marks are at TDC you should then find that cyl no 1 or no 4 will have the two cam lobes pointing upwards at approx 45degrees . Adjust BOTH valves turn crank 180 degrees and repeat . HTH

Is the low point of the cam not when its on it side?

Rather than the opposite of the peak that you would expect when trying to initially set up the cam.

Am sure I heard that somewhere and that echo's what was said about the feeler gap getting bigger when the cams turned 45 Deg.

Hi i have been out it it today and it does not seem to bad now i have re-done the tappets . I called at a mates who has the same cam in his car and they sound the same it must just be me !!! . I have also EMAILED Piper it check i have done them right Graham
