2.5 v6
quinnj3 - 7/5/06 at 06:59 PM

hi people its been a very long time since i've posted here but i have now started my locost build on friday using the mcsorley 7+4 design. My intended running gear is a VX 2.5 v6 and gearbox from omega utilising wiring loom, ecu, control stalks and ignition barrel from donor car. (These can be picked up for £400) I will use a sierra LSD with a Dedion setup. I know its a bit different which is why i'm goin to do it. Any feedback good or bad on this setup would be relly appreciated. I know it wont be easy.

cheers

Jonny

PS
I was wondering if the cortina uprights will accept sierra hubs and if sierra cossie disc brakes will fit as well. ?

Hi there,

Sounds very interesting - go for it and good luck. The weight brigade will come along shortly and tell you how heavy the engine is, which is true. But who cares!!!

As a meggy driver and someone knowledgable regarding the engine's vices i'll say a big CHANGE THE CAMBELT AND TENSIONERS unless you like bent valves. Ultra-especially if you're lifting an engine from a scrappy car with no history.

And finally - use the three litre instead!! Make the installation work hard for all it's kilos.

The reason i want VX is because thats all i've ever known and i know the ecotec pretty well. I also reckon that the install shouldn't be too bad if a V8 can be fitted to this chassis. 2.5's are more common so parts should be cheaper and easier to find but if a 3.0 came along at the right price who knows what kind of head stagger i could take.

Well if you end up with a 2.5, then you can always fit some 3 litre cams at a later date. The same trick as employed in the vectra GSi and takes the 2.5 up to 193bhp. Not bad when the 3 litre is only 15bhp more than that.

id have to agree go for the 3 litre , but these cars get smoked around with no proper maintenance and ive done qiute a few belts and head gaskets on them over the years . one prob i came across was atfer a belt break apart from trashing the heads the valves hitting the pistons crush the ring lands making them drink oil after a few thousand miles. if your goind de-dion why not use the omega rear end and knock up some hub carriers so you might justify buying a complete car

I'm using a similar setup,

2 lt ecotec, manta 1.8 box, sierra lsd, with de-dion

all in a mcsorley +442

The 2.5 is gutless in the original omega (I have one)....but swap for 3.0 Cams and stick in a lighter car and you should have big happy smiley face.

Easier ways to get smiley faces, though don't let this deter you!

Good luck!! Maybe I'll follow in your footsteps when the rest of my Omega falls apart like all good Vauxhalls do...

i was on the courtney website to check out the tuning potential. Everything seems really expensive but apart form that they reckon that changing the flywheel to a much lighter unit in the 2.5 helps the engine a lot as there is a huge flywheel as standard for emmisions in other countries.

i don't think this will be an easy project but it is far from impossible. between 3 people we will be able to do this. I'm an electrician with experience in working with control gear in industrial equipment, and the 2 others are metal workers and welders all with a passion for engineering and fast cars. It can only be fun.
