Can I start my engine with a dry transaxle?
RazMan - 8/5/06 at 08:27 PM

Possibly a silly question but as I haven't sorted my drive shafts yet I can't fill my transaxle or (I assume) it will just dribble out the vacant holes.
I would really like to check out the engine though - will I damage anything if I start it up with no oil in the transaxle?

Unlees you keep the clutch depressed the primary shaft will be spinning in neutral, no load but still turning at engine speed, so maybe not agood idea.

well i have atcually driven my car around the drive with no oil in the transaxle! so it should be ok in just neutral. the gearbox i accidently empited still works fine. but its up to u if u risk it tho. if u only have it idling in neutral i can't see how it will cause any damage.

please correct me if i am wrong tho!

its not good, but i've span mine up with a dry type 9. It used to have oil in so its not completely dry. Don't do it for long, pray, sacrifice a chicken or two and you'll be fine.

(maybe)

Hmmm I was thinking about sacrificing a virgin or two but there aren't any to be found round my way

I think I will risk a short engine tickover run - assuming it starts at all of course.

if you have got fuel and all ancileries going to an engine but its not connected to the gearbox could you just start the engine?

i dont think so as the starter motor bolts onto the gearbox iirc

In ref to omega

I would think you'd get away with it (under no load) if you put tape over the openings and just dribbled a little oil into the box.

Good luck with the start up

all mechyanical stuff can be run without oil ... but question is for how long before damage occurs?

can you not tape/bung up the holes and fill up with oil?

jam the clutch down?

trogdor - 9/5/06 at 04:15 PM

i would just put abit of oil in there, just to coat the surfaces slightly. it should be fine. like i said before i empited my transaxle accidently. then had to move the car around the garden. i was really careful and the gearbox seems ok, the freewheel still works and everthing! so i would just go for it! unless its a really expensive gearbox.
