Setting Up Twin DCOE 40's

I am currently 'Trying' to set up my engine so as not to run like a bag of spanners.

I am running a standard 1600 pinto with twin 40's.

1.) Does any one know the advance angle the ignitinon timing should be set at. Haynes says 6-8 degrees, webber site says 12-16 degrees. Any know for sure?

2.) I need to set the mixture correctly, I was going to use a Gunsons Colourtune, do they work?

I am then also going to use a Gunsons carb balencer, and repeat the whole cycle to check. Does this sound about right?

by coincidenc I've just been messing with mine - meant to do someting esle but you know how it goes...

1) the difference between haynes/weber book for timing probalby takes into account the lack of advance due to vacuum - twin chokes will take off from one cylinder whereas normal would be to take from all 4. Dunno what mine is set at but I would suggest somewhere in betwee, 10 BTDC would be a good point to start and advance it until pinking under load, then take it back.

2) I need to read book again but think mixture is set by jet sizes; only idel mixture can be changed. Book says screw fully in then out by 2.5 - 3 turns. I did this - had the colour tune in - but could not see it made any difference between 2 - 3 turns out - I left it at 2 1/4)

Do you have carb balancer? If you haven't dont' bother buying one - you can do it by year listening to the exhaust.

You know about the idle/sync screws? Basically do as the book says then listen to the exhaust - once you got a steady beat, then leave it at that.

Balance the carbs first.
Then use the colourtune (yes they do work)
finally re-check balance.
not sure about advance but around +10 deg at idle with vac dissconnected sounds about right.

The old method of balancing carbs before Gunsons jumped on the bandwaggon was to use a piece of rubber/plastic tube.
With the air filters removed put one end of the tube 1/4" into the venturi of the first carb and the other end close to your ear. Listen to the "note" of the suck.
Then swap the tube to the other cab.
The "note" will be quite different if the carbs are out of balance.
Adjust throttle stops until they sound the same.
Much cheaper that buying a "cabalancer" and just as accurate.
