pinto lack of revs
Ketchup - 4/6/06 at 06:00 PM

Hi all, i have a 2ltr pinto in my project, it used to be efi, i have removed all that and stuck on some carbs, i tested it before hand and it used to rev freely, now it gets to about 2000/2500 rpm and starts to miss and bang like fook.

it almost seems like a rev limiter but is very angry sounding (technical, i know)

does anyone out there have any ideas of what i could be missing? i was thinking along the lines of a faulty dizzy, will try another one tomorrow hopefully (cheers jonno!) but in the meantime i am open to anyones ideas!

cheers,
Ross

have tried different leads, has new plugs and have tried a different carb and was the same

confused

sounds like ignition timing or a blocked main jet in the carb.....

Cheers

i have tried another carb, and have tried tweaking the timing, both of which have a zero effect, it does seem likes its not advancing or being knocked back, but it is a vac-less dizzy and the ignition parts of the loom have not been messed with

Points dizzy ?

if you are trying to run the original EFI ignition from the ECU without the fuel side of things I think you will have problems

Ketchup - 4/6/06 at 06:56 PM

u think so?

12a RX-7 - 4/6/06 at 06:58 PM

well you did mention that the ignition side of things is still the same as when it was EFI!

can only go on the info that YOU give us

easy now.. the ignition system loom seems completely stand alone to the efi side of the loom, this may or may not be the case, and i am having problems, tis why i posted in the first place

the ignition and fuel side of things are all handled by the ecu and are linked. things like the throttle position, airflow, inlet temp etc. etc. all affect the timing. It sounds as though your ECU is in safe mode.

the only reason i am finding this all odd is that my mates dutton has exactly the same dizzy and ignition system, i must be missing some sort of trigger for the advance, i think i am gonna have to look at his in more detail and scratch my head. cheers for the input

been having a play in the garage and it seems there is an aditional wire on the little black box for the ignition than on the system fitted to the carb powered pinto's unit.. im was thinking it may get a feed from the ecu for like a limp-home mode feature. i just cut it.. revs like a bloody dream now!!!

Hi

Are you using the original dizzy and amp off the efi donor?

If so thats a tfi dizzy and has no advance mechanism, if its running in limp home mode you'll only have 10 degs advance

As said already you cant use the std EFi ignition system unless you have the full ECU and all sensors etc connecting.

When i changed over to 38DGAS carb i also changed to the earlier type electronic ignition and have never had problems.

Newer electronic wont advance correctly when revving up (i think this is the hall effect set up, needs extra signal that is processed by the newer ECU).

I would check what advance you are getting now with a strobe. I don't know what effect cutting the wire has, but as said before the ECU controlls advance so the dizzy will be fixed. might be that you are geting loads of advance now which will cause problems when the engine is under load.

You really need a distributor from a non-injected 2.0 Pinto.

i accept that just chopping a wire is not gonna be 100% but at least i can move it around without setting car alarms off till i can sort it properly.. i think the module will be fine, but yes i doubt it will advance correctly or at all

cheers people
