BHP of a Landy V8?
donut - 10/6/06 at 10:56 AM

Does anyone know the BHP from a 3528CC V8 Engine removed from a 1988 LAND ROVER 110

Danozeman - 10/6/06 at 10:58 AM

10bhp

Are you looking at getting another engine to get rid of?

donut - 10/6/06 at 11:08 AM

ha ha!! yes very good.... but kinda true as i do have a bit of a reputation where 4 cylinder engines are concerned but a V8 is very different and i'm gonna put one in my Indy...at some point.

stevec - 10/6/06 at 11:16 AM

There is a bit about them halfway down this page Andy.
Steve.

graememk - 10/6/06 at 11:33 AM

depends on how many people are pushing it

ReMan - 10/6/06 at 11:37 AM

91 BHP!
Your gonna need 2 of them then

donut - 10/6/06 at 11:42 AM

ooooh thats a bit pants!!

Why is it that the local engines are always the wrong ones to get

Humbug - 10/6/06 at 12:46 PM

Isn't that what the guy had in his Viento at Newlands last Sunday (wilkingj)?

donut - 10/6/06 at 12:58 PM

Yep!! Sounded lurvley.

Heres a pic of an Indy with the RV8

I thought the landy v8 was tuned to produce more torque but less bhp? Could be wrong though. I thought the sd1 v8 was the better version for 'our' use? Unless you can find a tvr version lying about handy....

donut - 10/6/06 at 03:26 PM

The SD1 is the better version and i did find a Westy with a 4 litre TVR engine detuned to 300bhp!!!!

Pezza - 10/6/06 at 04:12 PM

sd1 was 155bhp new according to rover

bob - 10/6/06 at 04:21 PM

Andy

When you say that YOU are going to fit a V8 in your indy i'm a bit confused now.................. are you going to swap bodies with someone who can

mark chandler - 10/6/06 at 08:27 PM

Landrover v8, early is around 100bhp, this is the 8.25:1 comp, although the engine is identical to the later landrover 135bhp ! The early ones had a restrictor in the inlet (which can be dragged out) directly in front of the carbs.

Range rover V8 is a better choice as you get 9.75:1 comp ratio, same valves as and SDI with slightly milder cam, swap this with a 3.9 cam and you are back to 165bhp. Bit of fettling with the heads and exhaust with a 3.9 cam gives 200bhp.

What you need to do is look where the dipstick goes into the block, this is in goes through a machined flat with the comp ratio stamped, if its got 9:75 then you are generally okay, avoid any engine with 8:xx

Regards Mark

Any RV8 in basically any good nick can be fettled as far as your budget. Look in rocker covers if they are full of brown goo go find another alsu check waterways for white crap again be careful both of these are signs of poor maintennance, insufficient oil changes or water rather than 50% anifreeze.

Once you have a basic engine in good nick there are many resources for tuning, lots on the web or in any Landrover mag

I don't know the availability in the Uk but a Locost I know of used a Ford 302 I believe with steel heads and his weight came out 1250 lbs with 50/50 weight distribution, the chassis was a +4 and he should have done a bit more reinforcing. I plan on building one with a 351 using an aluminum head and flywheel which should come out about 450 lb for the engine which is about the same as the Tbird Turbo coupe (pinto 2.3) engine but with atleast 100 hp more.

to answer original question, it is listed as 116 bhp, CR 8.13.

The engine referred to above, it is stage 1 and millitary - restrictors were put in to prevent the army from going too fast in them!

Increasing CR is matter of swapping in the pistons. As said, RR engines are more powerful, starting with 135 and 163 bhp before going on to larger bore/stroke engines.

SD1 vitess, efi put out 194 bhp.

blueshift - 12/6/06 at 03:49 PM

I got a vitesse efi I thought they were 180bhp though. 10ish more to be had if you changed to an non-flapper airflow sensor type (carbs or hotwire MAF), more again with exhaust mods.

however it has languished for many months not in a car doesn't make any bhp at the moment. lazy me.
