My search for a suitable pre 95 2L Mondeo is proving fairly fruitless up here in the cold north.
There are masses of 1.8's and I was wondering if the 1.8 fits the same as a 2.0 from our 7esque point of view.
In short, type 9 box, bike carbs, Megajolt etc.
After SVA a 2.0 black top will find its way in so it needs to be a fairly straight swap using all of the above.
Any thoughts?
Go for the 1.8 and stick with it. I wouldn't bother changing the engine for something which is almost the same post SVA. The power difference you won't really notice and spend the money on tuning parts like head/cams instead. Lots of Westfield owners selling 1.8 parts when changing to a Duratec I suspect so you might be lucky and pic up a ready to fit tuned unit.
Yes it does and it's cheaper to get it going as you don't need some bits like a new water pump as the 2 litre pumps the wrong way.
If i was doing it i would go 1800.
My soon to be Missus has a Puma with a 1.8. It goes like stink.
That's not a standard Puma then I guess? They only came with the 1.4, 1.6 or 1.7 Zetec-SE, which is a totaly different engine to the 1.6, 1.8
and 2.0 Zetec-E used in Escorts and Mondeos etc.

Totally bog standard. Must be wrong on the engine, thought it was a 1.8? The engine is not the same
as the 2.0l. That's about all I know about Zetec's in two posts. Nice little go cart to drive, but terrible viz out the back. Still goes
like stink regardless.

Lots more 1.8's around as well. Will be on look out for a decent low milage Mondeo now.

...or get one from a 1.8 Escort. The sump isn't as deep as the Mondeo (about 2 cm extra clearance)and the Mondeo often has air-con which means
that the water pump needs replacing.
I used an Escort Si engine which was the 115PS one and no air-con and it worked very well on Webers. Don't know if the Si was available pre 95
though.
If you stick a 1.8 in and get hold of a 2.0L head or just 2.0L cams the extra lift on the valves will bring the power up to allmost the same as the
2.0L anyway.
Lots of people do this as a cheap simple upgrade.
Especially if you run FI Megasquirt, Omex etc.
There may not be that much difference in the peak bhp figures, but how about as an overall package? Coming from a VW background myself, I can tell you
there is a world of difference between the VW 1.8 and 2.0l 16v engines, I've got a Passat 2.0 block in my Golf 16v and it's just a totally
different car. There really is no replacement for displacement, it'd take some serious work (and $$$) to get the 1.8 to provide the same output

The 1.7 puma's are variable valves which is why there good..
The 1.8 and 2 litres are nearly the same power if u put the 2 litre cams in. They just lack a little bit of torque. As said the 1.8's r cheaper
than 2litres to buy. Try and get an escort one as they have the correct water pump and smaller lighter flywheel.
