Cambelt probs!
Ace Sportscars - 14/6/06 at 11:37 AM

My Pinto cambelt ripped some teeth off a few weeks ago causing my car to come to a halt. The engine was rebored to a 2.1 and as far as I know wasn't skimmed.

Does anyone know if the pistons hit the valves in these occurances or am I safe. I haven't taken the head off to take a look and was hoping a quick change of cambelt would be enough to get me up and running again. Say your prayers for me!

The only way to be sure is to strip the head down. You know it's the right way to do it any you're just being lazy if you don't...

I would just fit the belt and try it. If it's no good you'll soon know and you probably won't damage it more than it is already

Cheers

probably stating the obvious but you would slowly turn the engine over by hand with plugs removed and stop should there be any resistance; maybe done best with rocker cover off as well?

maybe worth draining the oil and examining for metal and broken piston bits

You will need to set the timing again too, and I suppose you could take all the plugs out and test for compression if you have a tool. This would tell you if the timing is back in and if there has been damage - wouldn't it?

Just turn the cam pulley, I know the standard 2.0 doesn't make contact (mine anyway) but if you have a hot cam or skimmed head it may. You can't do a compression test till it's back together but you can set each piston to tdc while you check if they hit.

I'd be more worries about why it ripped the teeth off the belt to begin with...
