At the moment I have a half rebuilt 1300 X-flow.
I have just been offered a 1600 Zetec.
Should I carry on with what I've got or change to the Zetec?
I have aquired a set of Suzuki T/Bs so fuelling is not a consideration, as either one will end up with these and Megasquirted.
I haven't started my chassis build yet, but soon will hopefully.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers guys.
Take the Zetec - particularly if it's cheap
As a confirmed x-flow user, I would recommend...
...the Zetec (if it's in good condition).
The x-flow is a fine engine, but the Zetec is more modern, spares are more generally available, revs more, and will give you more power with fewer
mods.
There's not a huge difference in weight, but the Zetec's a fair bit taller.
rgds,
David
Thanks for the input guys.
I have noticed that X-flow bits are becoming rarer and pricier.
I may well take your advice, if the mileage and price aren't too high. Or even look for another Zetec and sell the X-flow to the classic Ford
fraternity.
Cheers,
John.
If the crossflow is half built then finidh it! a running freshly built engine will always fetch more. Crossflow parts are still easy to find IF you
know where to look, just picked up a rebuilt cosworth 5 port dry sump pump yesterday for £80!
Mac
Nice one Mac.
Put the x-flow on e-bay and stick a bike engine in it.
You know you want too.............
Mmmmmmh! Now I am bloody confused.
And also pig sick. I got in late this afternoon and missed a Honda bike engine that I had been watching. Good runner too!
IT WENT FOR £50 !

Perhaps I should build a boat instead?

BECs are an entirely different annimal to CEC.
Unless your are truly an all out rabid speed junky with a lot of performance driving experience best avoid a BEC, even with a 1300 xflo a Locost is
very very nippy, with an 1800 Zetec it will be much much faster than anything you will have experienced, and performance with bike engins is a bit
too explosive.
I would put the zetec in it , i have a 1600 crossflow fitted with megasquirt and it goes well and sounds nice but i really want a zetec in it. With
the crossflow you will need to get the head converted to unleaded to allow you to use an oxygen sensor in the exhaust as the additives I am using
damage the sensor, this is going to put at least £100 on the cost of the engine plus there is a lot more info on running zetecs on megasquirt.I have
found it difficult to get a good idle vacuum on mine with an uprated cam shaft fitted.
I am going to change to an 1800 zetec next winter.

Thanks for all the advice guys. It is greatly appreciated.
The path that I have decide to follow as a result of your input is:
Finish re-building the X-flow and put it in the car I am building for the experience and to try out the injection system (because I don't like
not finishing what I have started).
Take the X-flow out, fit a twin choke weber that I was going to use originally and sell it to a classic ford nut ( sorry, enthusiast ).
Use the funds generated to aquire a Zetec and fit that. Have a season spanking that around the island and then consider if I want to uprate the
adrenalin flow and spend the next winter going the BEC route.
I have gained an incredible amount of knowledge on this forum already, as I new bugger all before.
Thanks again guys for taking the time to help out.
John.
PS The head has already been converted Paul but thanks for that.
