I'm sure it's been discussed before but has any one found a bell housing to convert this engine to run a T9 gear box. I know Donkervort are using it but not sure what box or bell housing they use.

Uprated Type 9 and BW T5 for the higher powered models if i recall correctly

I've had a look into this recently as I entertained using the 16v engine out of my Golf (same block basically). I think Donkervoort use a custom bellhousing ($$$) The other info I found was that estfield use a Lada Riva gearbox with the VW/Audi blocks, but I don't think the Lada box is up to much more than about 150bhp before going bang, and I can't see them being that easy to find.

One of these days someone is going to start producing a bellhousing to fit an audi block to something like a type9, and they'll make a killing. These are cracking engines, and they're in virtually everything VAG make at the mo so they're easy to find.

I know it would be a lot of work but would it not be possible to make a bellhousing out of steel box section with ali skin?....or modify an existing bell?

I think I would take a look at a LT van gearbox in a breakers, possibly using the FWD bellhousing and attaching the box to that?

Instead if a whole new bell housing, couldnt an adaptor plate just be used? Would just need to be laser cut from thickish plate. Not sure you could use a type 9 with a longer input shaft of if you would have to take some material off the existing bell housing to compensate for the plate.

I can't think of any VW gearboxes with detachable bellhousings though, so the plate would have to be at the engine. Now I come to think of it there's also VW's backwards clutch to think about (pressure plate bolts to the crank, flywheel on the gearbox side, and the clutch is actuated by a pushrod through the centre of the input shaft). I suppose it's just a case of mating a flywheel to the VW crank, although the bolt pattern on the crank is eccentric so some fiddling might be required.

LT van 'box looks like a good bet.
