Apologies if this topic has already come up, but I don't seem to be able to find anything in the search.
I'm just wondering the sort of maximum power and torque a type 9 would be able to put up with before it err...snapped?
At least one person has said "no..no..no..NO" when I suggested bolting one to my current engine choice. Just interested in what the general
consensus is?
Thanks,
Bill
How much grip will you have, and how heavy will the car be ?
These two factors are every bit as relevant as engine grunt.
According to zetec inside it'll take around 200BHP

Might be a bit close then as my engine is 197bhp stock
There are 'beefed up' type 9's out there but can't remember what car they were put in.
Give Brian a ring at BGH Geartech. These guys know all about this gearbox. They have checked mine and fitted a long first gear and HD bearing. I asked
them to make it o.k. for 200BHP although I am fitting an st170 engine into my car.

hi dave
how much did they charge you for this service, and what ratio on 1 did you go for?
Adrian
High revs kill the type 9 pretty quickly too. BGH will be able to advise
When Brian did my type 9 he was a lot less interested in the power, than the torque. The HD bearing that he fits is (I think) from a Granada or
Scorpio ?? However, I'd echo the previous comment --- give Brian a ring, or better yet, go visit him. He's an old-school engineer, who
*really* knows his stuff. He's also a very friendly bloke, with a constantly boiling kettle, and a delight to talk to.
Cheers
Richard
As said, bhp does not kill boxes. Torque and high revs will though. No idea what the type 9 will take, but it was bolted to the colougne 2.9 v6, so shouldn't be too bad.
power = torque * revs!!!!!
The heavier duty type 9s were fitted behind 2.8 and 2.9 V6s in capris and sierras. They can be identified by an additional stub below the input shaft
(unless its a very early one like the one I gave to BGH). BGH can make the standard onws heavier duty but the ratios are dependant on whether they
start with a 2.8 box or a 2l box.
See www.bghgeartech.co.uk
I picked up a box from them yesterday and am happy with the advise and service. Not fitted it yet so can't actually comment on the box but
i'm sure it'll be fine and they do offer warranty.
