What Lump?
Grayo - 24/7/06 at 01:13 PM

My first post as a newbie here, so Just want to say Hi to everyone before I get into it!

I decided to build my own locost about a month ago, and have been deliberating a fair amount over the engine and drivetrain.... I reckon I'd like something like 160 to 180HP, and something that's not as rare as rocking horse shite to get parts for.

I'm thinking maybe a Mondeo Zetec; can this be mated directly to the Sierra 'box? Does anyone have any alternative suggestions for an engine/'box/axle combo - preferrably one requiring as little modification as possible (see, I told you I was a newbie to this stuff!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yamaha R1

Have fun mate.

ned - 24/7/06 at 01:20 PM

vauxhall xe fits the bill nicely

smart51 - 24/7/06 at 01:23 PM

2.0 Mondeo Zetecs are 130PS as standard aren't they? I guess you could tune it up.

Carbed R1 = 150 or 160 if filtered and jetted, 2004 FI R1 = 178 (but at high revs).

ZZR 1200 is about 180.

1.8T K series = 150 and 1.8VVC Kseries = 143 and there is a bell housing available for a type 9 box.

ignore the other two

you're on the right track - pre 95 zetec so easier on the emissions. believe the 1.8 ((bit less onpower in standard form that you a looking for) is easier to plumb in.

Welcome

Yes, Zetec can be bolted straight onto Type 9 box. Do a search on the forum for more details - its been covered at length.

For a simple engine set up yet good HP I would opt for zetec to begin with then put some bike throttle bodies on with megasquirt at a later date. Parts are all easy to get hold of and its been done many times before so info and experience isn't hard to come by.

Hope this helps a little,

Adam

Thanks for the help guys.

I reckon I may start with a Sierra donor then and build an IRS 'frame, and get hold of a reconditioned or short zetec. Should be a good base to start from anyway....

Thanks again!

Zetec mate. Bike carbs and megajolt is so simple to set up. Bolts straight to a type 9.

If you go 2 litre youl need a 1.8 flywheel and escort 1.8 water pump.

If you get a 1.8 from an escort youl have he right pump and flywheel and put 2 litre cams in youl get near 130bhp the same as a 2 litre just lacking a little torque.

NS Dev - 24/7/06 at 05:11 PM

will concur, not quite as easy to fit as the zetec, but extremely easy non the less, and the vauxhall makes much better power and torque!!!

(200hp stock on throttle bodies)

MikeR - 24/7/06 at 05:27 PM

Ah, but the parts to make it fit are non standard, it weights a huge amount, gives you sod all ground clearance, they aren't traditional and you have to drive like a nutter to own one.

Defence,
The gearbox bellhousing is non standard but they do exist, either wait for one on ebay or buy one new

Weight, well ok for the realists its prob only about 10 - 15kg (guess) more than a zetec but a good 20+ than a crossflow & i've got a crossflow so its a lardy thing

Ground clearance is body work dependent, if you go the traditional caterham / Stuart Taylor low line then the engine sticks out the bottom, other manufactures have an extra inch or two height and your fine - depends what look you want, me, i'm low line so crossflow wins again.

The crossflow is the traditional and best opinion (wonder why i think that?) but the VX engine was fitted to the caterham so thats another source of parts.

Drive like a nutter ....... well Ned drove through a town centre with the entrails of a poor animal attached to his car and NS Dev ......... well, he races - nuff said.

Zetec is possbility the easier choice as its been fitted to a huge number of sevens. VX engine has been fitted so equally possible. Supposidly the 2.0 zetec on decent exhaust and inlet makes an easy 150 where the VX makes an easy 190 (NS Dev i'm being polite, easy 150, easy 190, should get more in reality!!!!)

On a decent ecu with a good ex manifold and Throttle bodies a 2.0l Zetec will make 150 brake with no mods.

MikeR - 24/7/06 at 06:24 PM

errm, i know i'm pedantic, but changing the exhaust and inlet is a mod! ok so its a mod you have to do to fit it in the car therefore doesn't count, but i'm feeling pedantic.

chriscook - 24/7/06 at 06:27 PM

XEs are the way forward. Finished my Phoenix not that long ago and it goes like stink.

Plenty of parts around and its a common kit car engine. Lots of cheap (relative term) tuning bits around. Mine is standard bar rod bolts and makes 180bhp on 45 carbs and a megajolt ignition system.

Any read the July PPC? Rover 2L turbo engine? 200bhp straight out the box. Dead easy cheap 225bhp. Outstanding indeed!!

Straight forward rwd conversion using parts from a Sherpa van.

I dont know why I dont do it myself instead of the recommended 1.8 zetec on bike carbs and megajolt!

MikeRJ - 25/7/06 at 12:15 AM

225bhp? That would be about 1bhp per kg of engine then They are very heavy.

coozer - 25/7/06 at 04:58 AM

Yeah, so thats 1000bhp per ton for the engine..... just sit on it and GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Same block as a the diesel isn't it? I suppose it means you can really wind up the boost. Not ideal for a 7 though.

Only one comment on the weight, its difficult to be exact but the VX is about 3-5kg heavier than the zetec. Just eat a few less burgers and that's the weight issue solved!

scotty g - 25/7/06 at 05:52 PM

DURATEC, its lighter than a Zetec or A Vauxhall, you can pick them up from about £350 at the scrappers and without any internal mods, just a nice exhaust and plennum you can get 180bhp.
If i didn't already have a Zetec in the garage i would have one of these, bags of torque too.

doughie - 25/7/06 at 06:09 PM

what cars have the duratec in them?

scotty g - 25/7/06 at 06:13 PM

Latest gen mondeo's for 2 litre
Latest focus has a 1.8 (crap)

MikeR - 26/7/06 at 06:54 AM

But the exhaust is on the wrong side on a duratec (for me). It comes out on the drivers side in the UK. On the Zetec / Crossflow / XE the exhaust comes out on the passengers side.
