How much power for a type 9

Hello all, im new and looking to get my first KC soon, itll be a 7 type car which one im not sure yet, Anyway what sort of power can a 5 speed type 9
box handle? I ask as im looking at cars that will either have a 160 - 180 bhp lump installed by me or already has one!! most cars ive seen have a type
9 box and sierra running gear, prop, shafts etc but im now wondering if that will be to much!!! please comment, many thanks

Hi,
There are 2 versions of the Type9 (to my knowledge).
One is the standard pinto gearbox and popular wisdom says its good for around 180hp? Certainly it's performing fine in my circa 160hp Zetec.
However you can get the V6 Type9 - which has different bearings and a slightly longer main input shaft - this is good for 240ish hp.
Obviously I'm no expert - these are just figures I have been consistently quoted - from time to time
If you are getting a Type9 box - check the layshaft - that's the most common fault - so I am told

The MT75 which has the same ratios as the type 9 is regarded as stronger and is lighter, the T5 box as found in the Cosworth and Ford Mustangs is the
strongest you can fit before going Quafe or BGH and has the benifit of much better ratios for our aplications.

Ta!, sounds good, any comments on the rest of the drive chain? the prop, diff and shafts? I cant see a probelm myself i have seen no complaints, but i
have seen an add where its claimed the shafts and box have been upgraded as the 140bhp engine riped them apart???? sounds like they may have been
knackered in the first place!

Er - I reckon thats an 'outlandish' claim 
I didnt mention the other gearboxes - because you specifically mentioned type 9.
The MT75 is a HUGE thing - and really didn't suit my transmission tunnel - and you'll pay over the odds for a T5.
Type9 is a good solid box - the ratio's are a bit shitty - but you can get a kick ass BGH box for around £600ish quid - that will be bullet proof

I think a standard type 9 is good to about 140-150bhp (see latest PPC mag, they have a table for all type 9's).

ive been putting 215bhp through a type 9 for 45,000miles with sticky tyres
ive blown up one box. replacement was free from the back of a mates garage. why worry? theyre cheap as chips and just as plentifull.
revs tho will kill them so if your fitting a 9000rpm screamer as opposed to my 7500rpm then life expectancy will be shortened.

Na! im looking to buy second hand, with pinto or zetec, and if it dosent have it already ill be looking to 160 - 180 hp, ive spoken to someone in
essex's who will do me a swap zetec (exchange) with stage 3 fully reconed for 1900 inc fitting, which he said should be good for 185bhp. if its a
pinto im guessing 160 will be the limit. but should be good for some fun.. i just want a good car to start with and then the rest i can buy/fit as i
go. but the gearbox and running gear on tigers/westfields/mks seems to be the same so this is why i have asked...thanks so much for your input guys!
fingers crossed i should have a car by the end of the year, Gotta sell me bloody bike first, anyone want a 250 2 stroke? LOL

Westfield run the mt75 as standard I think. As said, they are plentiful and cheap (roughly £40-50) so try it and see.

All depends on the car its fitted to. Its torque that kills them and that depends on whether the wheels will spin first or the engine will max out its
torque output first.
In a seven you can never really use peak torque as it invariably spins the wheels. In that instance you will get away with circa 200hp on either a hd
or std type 9.
On the other we used to use 1 std HD type 9 per event when tarmac rallying with a 200hp XE engine in a talbot sunbeam, they just got destroyed.
I don't expect my type 9 to last long behind my 200hp XE. I have 2 spares, when they break I will talk to brian hill!
I would doubt the 240hp figure. The HD type 9 was notoriously weak when used in the Capri 2.8i and mk2 granny manuals. My 2.8i capri had a very tired
sound in 4th, and the box in my mk2 granny was very tired at a lowish mileage.
Quaife quote 240hp for their normal straight cut gearkit in a type 9 and 275hp for the pro kit (with replacement mainshaft)

I had an MT75 in my 2L Zetec. After "lots" of engine work it was dyno'd at 241bhp and I blew up the Mt75 in a sprint at Castle Combe.
Have subsequently fitted a BGH (Heavy duty type 9) with custom heavy duty ratios which is rated for 280 -300bhp.
