Hi all, I'm about to embark on the 'journey' that is my first ever Locost build. I'm a motorsport engineering student at Coventry Uni, and want to try and learn some more by building a '7' from scratch. I've found a nice 1.6 Kent Engine, with T9 gearbox, and twin Weber 40's. Just want to make sure before I make a decision that this will fit into the "book" chassis? Im guessing so just want to make sure . .

It should do fit adn if it's cheap buy it anyway for the twin 40's!

You may need to modify the footwells to accept the T9 box, but the enigne will fit fine. the carbs may need a hole making in the side of the bonnet, depending on the manifold and filter.

Thanks for the replies, I don't know whether its a reasonable price, £400 for the engine, which comes with starter, alternator, etc. It's apparently been rebored to 1.7, flowed, etc, Though I would rebuild anyway just for the knowledge. I'd have thought that this price was reasonable considering it comes with the carbs, filters, and gearbox. I'm now just concerned with the fact that I won't be able to tell whether it even runs until the whole project is near complete . . My way of thinking is that If I buy the engine before anything else, it gives me something to be getting on with, and Ill be able to trial fit when building the chassis. Just have to buy now and hope I suppose . .

400 seems a little steep but not unreasonable, would be a good price if you knew for sure that the engine was in top rebuilt condition - but if you plan to rebuild it anyway, you might be best starting with an engine you know needs work, and hence you could get cheap. The carbs and manifold are probably 150-250 of the 400 anyway.

type 9 box should fit book chassis fine,

That's the setup I'm using - fits without problems.

You may need to shorten the sump, but that's not a big issue.
