I'm trying to decide on anengine for a seven style kit.... at present I'm thinking of a xflow or pinto just because this is my 1st project,
the other option is a zetec.
Regarding the zetec engine, how much more work and cost is involved using these ?
If I use carbs on a zetec does the ignition still need mapping ?
What ecu is used and how does it intergrate into the loom supplied by most kit manufacturers ?
Thanks in Advance,
Kosmo

I have recently finished my first build and i used a pinto. If i had known then what i know now i would have used a Zetec.
The costs a very simular. I know the pinto may come with the donor but a Zetec can be brought for around £100.
All the ancilliaries for a pinto need to be purchased for a zetec.
Poss Alternator
Poss Starter Motor
New clutch.
Bike Carbs and Manifold.
The cost of the Megajolt is around £100 ish, but someone who has got one may give a more accurate £.
For a few hundred £ more you get more power and a lighter engine, with a smoother delivery. From what i understand it is straight forward to connect
to the loom. The megajolt will require mapping but i understand this to be straightforward also.
Personally if you dont mind a few £200ish more i would go Zetec.
Somebody may come along later and mention Bike Engines.
Hope this helps
Cheers Nige

There is another way for a Zetec ignition...we got ignition systems from John Ehrlich at quad4rods.com in the USA - he builds a system based on the GM
DIS ignition. It's dirt-simple, doesn't require ANY building, tuning, timing, programming or anything. Wire it up & run it. Wiring is
simple: one wire to the sensor, one power wire, one ground, and one wire to your tachometer. System includes all wiring, sensor, sensor mount, and
adapting a Zetec front crankshaft pulley with a sensor plate. Sensor mount is a nicely-machined CNC aly unit. We haven't run ours yet, but the
parts are off-the-shelf GM stuff, so replacement parts should be easy worldwide if any are required. Price is currently $315 USD (roughly 150 quid?)
for the works. And, according to John, a Zetec with this ignition holds a world speed record at Bonneville!!

Priceless

That looks suspiciously like my cue.
Have you ever considered a bike engine? Maybe I ought to re-phrase that.....................
seeing as hellfire has gone on to bike engines I feel it only right to say......
Vauxhall XE 16v!!!!!!!!
I am increasingly feeling the need to throw down a large gauntlet to the BEC crowd on here, as soon as I am sva'd!!!
not long now!.................................

Are we talking on track, dragstrip or both?.........
Phil
Now I have the bike option thrown in ???
OK... If I choose the zetec option what is it that I need exactly for ignition and carbs, sounds like bike TB's are a good choice with
megasquirte ? What is the total cost of all this aprox ?
Concerning the bike engine choice, I hear these are great for the track but not for road ? What about lifespan and reliabilty ? I know nothing about
bike engines !!!
Sorry for the all the questions but this looks like the place to get the answers,
Cheers,
