I have seen several air filters that use a very fine stainless steel mesh as their filtration medium. as anyone got any info as to how efficient these filters are? Or any experience in using them.

My thoughts are that without some sort of oil in addition to the steel mesh they won't be filtering anything other than "the big bits"

seems to be a bit of a "max power thing" though.

Wouldn't use tham mysely as already suggested they only filter out the big lumps . Think David Vizard did some research on filters in his "A" series tuning book and suggests the like of K&N take some beating for flow and filtration

As said, if David Vizard says K&N are very good then I will not fit any other make to my engines.

David Vizard tests and knows how to interpret the results.

I wouldn't use anything other then K&N. When vizard tested them for hismini book, he managed to get the same flow rate from an open inlet and from a K&N. They also flow just as much when dirty, as the dirt actually aids the filter, making it better!

stainless mesh filters are pretty cack.

As already said, K&N take some beating, I use one on the grasser and it works extremely well, even when completely clagged up with dust, there is no perceived power drop-off, whereas it was really noticeable when I used a foam filter.
