Hi everyone, I've been building an Mk Indy R1 since last August. Firstly I would like to thank all the regulars on this site for the invaluable info 4 first time builders .
I am not brill at DIY but have managed to build the car including the wiring without help and have now passed the SVA and have Q plates. I can honestly say that passing the SVA on the 2nd attempt was one of the proudest moments of my life however this ellasion has now turned to dispair.
I've been out twice . should have got an idea that things were not good when I could only select 2 gears(I paid £900 for the '98 engine from someone who advertises on this site) I found that there was a spring missing from the gear selector arm!.Before finding this out I made numerous calls to the seller who initially sent an Email saying it could be linkage but then never replied again and still has not when it looked more serious. He never replied about the R1 clocks that I paid £100 for and I found were imports and only can show KPH which SVA would not except even though the speed healer was converting the speed to MPH. I bought more clocks.
I now thought it was all sorted and could change gear. On the 2nd run out a couple of days ago everything seemed fine and I must say the car is (was) awsome. Then as i changed into 4th and accelerated the gear made a loud clanging noise and appeared to be trying to jump out of gear. I went into 5th which seemed fine but when I changed back down the noise returned and I could not get out of gear I slowed down and it then went into 3rd but now there was a fairly loud clattering noise which seemed to get worse when the clutch pedal came up and I could "feel" the noise through the pedal. I limped home feeling sick. 2 trips out and the car is back again in the garage the weather has warmed up .I've built it, can't drive it! I've done far more than I ever thought I could do, I don't think I can strip the transmission,I've used all my money ,time and wife's patients. But I cannot bear the thought of being off the road. What is the cheapest way of sorting a potentially knackered gearbox. Can you replace the whole lot with a recon box ? How much are they and where do I get one without again being ripped off?
I've built the thing without asking for help on this site but I am at the end of my tether and need help.
I cannot believe another kit car enthusiast who buys and sells bike engines refuses to help me its killing me.
This is the last time I am going to appeal to his better nature to assist me and that is why I have not named him and his "company"in the vain hope he might offer some assistence.Can someone help me please.?
P.S I've an R1 clock if anyone is interested displays KPH only,paid £100 will except £50.

Who is it? So we all know in future not to use them

give the other persona say 3 days to help you out or name and shame and let us make our own minds up based on facts from both sides if we wish to deal with them in the future.

Reagrdless of who it is, Welcome to the site with your first post. It sounds as if you may have lost a selector fork. Thses are a common)ish) thing to go wrong in a bec due to the hard gear change that some have. Sorting it isn't that hard, but it may be worth finding out how much it'd be to get the local Yamamaha palce to look at it. If not It can be done if you take your time and go slow with it.

Look were not all bad - give us (as a community) a chance and we will get you back on the road ASAP as painlessly as possible. I sure well all help in advice and drink your tea where possible.

If you ask really nicely well send the BOYS round to see MR "unknown" that's now avoiding you.

I wouldn't name and shame. Even if the unit is knackered, keep badgering him personally. I do not believe in public floggings, it's only counter productive in the long run.

You've posted in the right place though, I'm sure someone with plenty of BEC experience will be able to help get you back on the road ASAP.

Unfortunately, I know less than bugger all about the things! Give me a crossflow any day

thanx for your replies gents i am in the Leicester area. I am going to send an e mail to the man in questions' site and tell him that i have posted this message so he does not miss it. I will tell him that if he just gives me a replacement engine i will never mention him i do not want to stir trouble i just want to drive my car. i have thought long and hard about what to do and not naming him is not an option.

sorry to hear about your problems,

first port of call would be to drain the oil, and drop the clutch cover off, you may get some idead from inside there as to how bad(or not) the damage is.

i think replacing the gearbox would be costly, as you will need to split the crankcases, you also need a large(and very clean) workspace to tackle it.

Try putting a post in the bec section, as I'm sure there's plenty of us round your way who could lend a hand, or if your really lucky, maybe someone who could help you while they persuad thier better half to keep yours company! Oh, the offer of tea and biscuits will always help draw a crowd!

theres a good few of us in the leics area with plenty of knowledge and kit, shout if progress is tricky.

i am at work until the end of the week and then going away for a few days. when i return i shall try and sort something out i know i cannot sort this without help anyone can have as much t or whatever they drink if they assist

It may help to alter your profile to include your area. That way people know wether to offer their help or not. If your south(ish) of leics, I may be able to pop up in my indy and lend a hand.

I'm not sure if it's the same on the 98 R1, but on the 2002 clocks you can change between MPH/KPH on the dials.

Hi firstly im presuming this is not one of my engines as i would have sorted it out had i recieved the e mail from you
so it sounds like your secondary selector shaft is knackered which unfortunatly buggers up the rest of the gearbox
if i had know of your problem a few days ago i had a very good box but have since sold it
if you can get the engine up to me ill strip it and tell you whats wrong no charge
if you want im at mallory park this sunday

thanx again for replying. I have spoken to yamaha about the clocks and the old import ones cannot be changed to MPH. It is no longer a problem now I have some more. Your offer Malc of Yorkshire engines is just the kind of generous and helpfullness that I have experienced since this project. For everyones' info I did not buy the engine from u and only wish I had.If my seller had a fraction of your decency i would not have written this message. unfortunately i am away on sunday but may have to contact you and perhaps drop the engine off in a week or so time.
