SD1 engine and Viento ground clearance
Paradoxia0 - 15/10/06 at 07:48 PM

Hi Guys

Rolled my Viento out today and grounded it on the slope out of the garage!!

What kind of ground clearance should I have from the sump and what can I do to remedy this?

The manual suggests 4" clearance under the front chassis and 4.5" under the rear - Think you can get this higher by winding up the springs but may be a bit of the pain to do this every time you take it out

Got enough room to put a couple of scaffolding planks down the slope to make it slightly less acute?

Going to have the same problem myself (If I ever get any time to work on the poor fecker...)

I have just over 2" under the sump, thats a bit low.
Fix the engine higher, or cut and raise the sump. (make it shallower and longer to retain the capacity), dont forget some baffling or trapdoors to stop the oil sloshing about and starving the engine of lubrication.

or just jack the suspension up a bit.
Or reshape you drive / garage entrance so it doesnt catch.

I have to drive up the middle of the road to get a wheel on both of the mini humps (traffic calming), as trying to drive over one just grounds the sump.

They are all pretty low anyway.

No idea what your sump looks like or is made from but what about chopping out an inch or so of it like the Pinto guys often do?

Cheers,

What ever you do, make sure you allow extra for suspension sag when you get your fat ass in it aswell. That may drop it another 4 inches

I'll have a look next time i'm round, but i think modifying your drive maybe the solution.

EDIT: next time, try raking loads of the gravel upto the concrete step, there may haev been some sinkage, this may help short term.

Don't expect any throwing of keys once she is running and on the road...

4 inch drop when my "fat ass" is in it as well...
