Which gearbox??
MattCraneCustoms - 19/12/06 at 06:45 PM

Right I've got two type 9's to choose from. one I bought from Catpuss, which is from a 1.8 sierra. As is typical, I was then given another, which i believed to be from a granada. They one from the granada seems to be heavier, though they both have been drained, and this one also has electric speedo pick up. So which one should I go for, as I'm putting the other up for sale when its repainted. I'm grateful for any advice.
Cheers
Matt

Edit: cant get photos to work again, photos under gearbox of my PA, type 9 1 and 2. Cheers

the granada one is heavier? maybe to cope with bigger engines? if this is so, i'd keep the granada one.

Is it from a v6 Granada? And therefore has the 1" longer bellhousing?

If not then I'd be interested to hear the difference when you do find it!

Cheers,
James

You have a U2U.
As I've got two engines, 3 cylinder heads and a cat in the pear tree, I'll quite happily buy back the gear box if you want to keep the sturdier one.
Hell I'll even throw in a prop shaft if you want as its near removal now.

You should compare the input shaft lengths. If they are both the same then the chances are that they are both the same.

If one is longer then that is the better box with a taller first gear (probably) you will need a spacer to go between the box and bell housing to use it though.

Hi Matt

your photo needs to show more of the input shaft to know whether its an uprated type 9 or not from the granada. Basically if it is the splined bit will finish before the releasae bearing sleeve, if its not, this bit will look just the same as the 1.8 sierra one.

PS nice signature, from the same film as mine unless I'm very much mistaken!!.....................Quality film....................now leave that Ether alone!!

lol its from the book / film. Ah the works of the good Dr. Thompson, was a great man!!!

If you're looking at changing stuff etc i'd love the electronic speedo bit.

Been looking for one for a while.

Could swap it for a normal speedo tail housing i got from Nat a while ago (i think its ok - Nat can you remember?)

I've got a spare standard gearbox as well if you want to go that far (i'm assuming the electronic speedo is off hte one you think is heavier)

Oh, the heavier one - does it still have the gearbox oil in it?

Is one bellhousing bigger than the other? Does it have an extra bolt bit underneath the input shaft when looking into the bell housing?

Did you have that one Mike, or did I scrap it? I can't remember to be honest. Why not just swap gearboxes!

MikeR - 20/12/06 at 08:31 PM

don't be too bleeding obvious!

(psst, what about swapping gearboxes? the one i've got came from another lister, he assumed it was ok, therefore i assume it is ok).

defo 'standard' size. Ie not a v6 one with the larger bellhousing / input shaft.
