OT defender 300TDI cambelt change
tegwin - 21/12/06 at 11:29 PM

A bit off toppic but any advice would be appreciated...

I need to change the cambelt in my sisters 1996 300TDI defender... Haynes dont appear to make a manual for that year for some bizare reason...

Has anyone got any experience with this engine? Is the cambelt a hard job?

I have a "timing belt tension on torque wrench figure", but how do I measure this figure and set it?

Anything I should know before I start?

I did a one last week, no bother if you are used to changing timing belts. Viscous fan takes a bit of getting off LH THREAD. Once then fan is out take the top hose off to get the fan cowl off, I didnt & cracked mine. Still, it come out with the hose still on then & went back in that way too before I glued it up, so I didnt have to deal with the coolant. Stick it in 5th with the the brakes on & use a big bar (we've got 3/4 drive) to slacken the front pulley RH THREAD which just pulls off. Then its just an alloy cover & you're in.
I just marked the pulleys with tipp-ex to keep things lined up & put a scratch on the flywheel through a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing.
The belt is fiddly to get on & off, you need the idler & tension pulleys off really to avoid stressing the belt. I used folded up cardboard between the pulleys & alloy surround to keep the belt in the pulley teeth while I got the idler & tensioner back on, saw a bloke use mole grips once. I give things a few turns over by hand to settle the belt & be double sure nothing is touching & recheck the marks line up, retension if needed, refit the front pulley & test run a few minutes ( I still had the coolant in) Check & retension the belt then put it all back together.
All the manuals say you have to reset injection pump timing but I've done tons of diesel belts & not seen it need to be done yet. If it starts right, sounds right & goes right then it must be right.

This is a definitive photographic guide. What Les doesn't know about LRs is not really worth knowing..!

I have a Haynes manual for the Disco 300Tdi it's purple in colour.

To do the job safely I would reccomend using the correct Sykes diesel locking pin kit.

This locks everything in place and saves a possible disaster.

Just my two pence worth...
