Rebuilding a Type-9
oliwb - 7/1/07 at 04:53 PM

Has anyone rebuilt their own type 9 gearbox before? If so is it fairly easy to do? Lots of ppl suggest that rebuilding gearboxes is not a DIY prospect but I can't see why not as the only specialist tools they seem to use are a press and some experience?! I plan on running my 2L zetec through it so would like to get a second box and recon it so that its ready to go in when this one goes bang! Any advice or encouragment much appreciated! Oli.

I nearly considered it when the type9 in my old tvr lost synchro in 3rd. I got the relevant haynes manual but in the gearbox section it said refer to specialist. I complained to haynes who said it's simply because no one does their own gearboxes any more but they posted me a photocopy of the section from the previous edition. I looked through it and promptly took my gearbox to a local specialist.

Good luck,

Mark

They have just reviewed BGH in Total Kitcar mag, they say it takes a day and a half to refubish a a type 9 and charge over £500 for a stadard box . I guess you get what you pay for.

My type9 has done 2-3000 miles in my 2.0 zetec without drama so far...
