Numpty Alert
My car really feels as if it needs another gear - it's a standard 5 speed MTX75 straight out of a Noble M12 but I think its the same as a V6
Mondeo. First gear is practically redundant and I do most of my starts in second so I wondered if is possible to change the final drive ratio without
it costing an arm and three legs?
You can change the final drive on an MTX-75 from 3.82 to 4.06.

Numpty Alert 2
it's too late and a nice glass or 3 of decent port for me to figure out if this is better or worse (and I often get it the
wrong way round at the best of times)
So lets just leave it at it's possible to change. Depending on the current going rate for arms and legs £175 is around a forearm and 2
knees.
What you could probably really do with is a close ratio gearset, but I suspect you might need to sell a kidney to get those.
Numpty, correct
The ratios are being changed the wrong way, but if they'll go that way, surely they'll go the other.
However, I suspect that won't be a low enough ratio. I'm planning on going from a 3.92 to 2.88, and even then suspect 1st won't be much
use

I doubt there's too many ratio's available for your box. It depends how many of the other boxes have matching R&P sets. Does your box match any of the other ford gearboxes/diffs? They may be a suitable ratio going elsewhere, something like 3.2-3.6 perhaps?
According to a US tuning goodies shop the European spec is 4.06:1 but I can't think of any way of checking this to make sure I've got this
ratio already fitted.
Also found a Quaife gearset for £1500

OK, (glad I added my caveat
)
Haynes comes to the rescue.
What you want is a French V6 Mondeo Final drive which is 3.41. (also fitted to some French 1.8's)
You should also get a gearbox from an 'early' 2.0 which has a higher ratio first and is closer ratio.
The 4.06 was only fitted to non French 1.6's
The whole range of options is bizarre so you'd really need to check first.

So it would appear that France isn't included in the European spec? Sacre Blue !
Thanks for the info iank, I will see what I can find in a French theme

Don't suppose the FWD Transit (or connect) box would be the same or the ratio's and better?
