Tin Top Help Please - Zetec SE
pajsh - 13/2/07 at 08:04 PM

The bearings in the water pump in SWMBO's car have failed and I need to replace it.

Car is 1999 Focus 1.6 Zetec SE.

I have a haynes manual but as usual it's a bit vague.

Having removed the aux belt & water pump pulley it says on 1.8 & 2.0 models the pump can now be removed from the housing. Then it goes on about removing the housing and the timing belt but doesn't mention about 1.6 models.

I was hoping not to remove the timing belt as this seems to quite an involved proceedure with timing tools and having to remove the engine mounts.

Does anyone know if I can replace the water pump without removing the timing belt?

As an aside she pulley over and asked a guy what was wrong and he said it was a loose ball joint and the wheel would fall off at any minute. I can only think he was having her on for a laugh but she was sh1t scared.

Hi,

Just had a look at Ford workshop manual and it does require the cambelt to be removed.

Allsorts of special tools needed for this job on 1.6 (totaly different engine to 1.8/2.0). As well as all the locking tools you need a puller for the bottom pulley.

The lower crank pulley and timing gear have no positive location and are only held in the correct position by the crank pulley bolt (its a stretch type so make sure you renew it). This position needs to be set with the timing tools!!!

Factory time about 3 - 4 hours depending whether aircon or not.

Mmmm thought as much.

Problem is it's 20 miles from home and I don't think it's drivable.

Thanks anyway. At least I know what I'm up against if I decide to have a go.
