Evening all,

im using a std type 9 gearbox on the back end of my 2.1 pinto, what is the best gearbox oil to use, what consistancy should i get? synthetic of semi-synthetic?
but i dont want to shell out a packet on oil!

i'm using whatever it says in the haynes manual and no issues (once i replaced the rear oil seal that is)

Think its EP90

Type 9 in the sierra & Granada should be semi synthetic, got one toped up with normal oil once & it ended up with me changing the gearbox.

Hi what ford recomended for the type 9 is ( I can't remember the grade but its red and looks like atf fluid but will find grade when in the workshop and replace this rambeling here. ) . But for competition/track use most of the specialists recomend a good EP80/90.

Haynes manual for sierra says:

SAE 80EP to Ford spec ESD-M2C 175-A
(Duckhams Hypoid 75W/90S)

N type up to 1987 1.90 litres
N type from 1987 1.25 litres

I filled mine up with castrol 80w90.

Take the lid off the box and just tip the oil in the top up to the bottom of the fill pulg hole (you can see it on the side of the box.

The std oil was indeed duckhams, and is a dark green colour.

Ford lowered the level to below the level of the level plug.
Because they were getting too many complaints about oil leaks.

Use a 75w-80 or 75w-90 multigrade gear oil - this will give a lighter gear change when cold.

Burton's dogalgue says you should use 75w/90 semi-synthetic oil in a type 9 gearbox
