On my Renault 5 the expansion bottle is lower than some parts of the system. To refill the system you remove the tank from its mounting (Rubber
straps) raise it up then open a couple of bleed screws in the highest hoses.
This seems like an attractive system, meaning that the tank could be located anywhere, but not too far away from the car as that would be very very 
silly.

I think it’s because it would have to pull a vacuum in the head to get the water out. If you had a gasket failure I'm sure the water would just
empty out. Seems a bit of a silly system and no doubt inspired by an enema...

Sounds like a typical french bit of engineering, everything is an after thought 
No need in a locost anyway, as the scuttle bulkhead is higher than the top of the engine.

Sounds about right for a French system...
These are the same Renault 5's that the Renault Extra vans were based on..
Instead of a Temperature guage on the dash.. or a warning light
They had what can only be described as a "your engine is Fu*ked light!"
The official factory way to fill the system is prob to pressure fill via one of the bleed screws.
Got to be a french thing. I had an AX once, it had about four different bleed screws in different places around the cooling circuit where it went higher than the fill point, why they couldn't have just done it properly in the first place is a mystery...
heh heh yep, got to admit peugeot OCCASIONALLY design something clever, but otherwise I can genuinely say I have only come acroos crap engineering
ideas on french cars.
All other manufacturers have at some point impressed me with something (e.g. GM vauxhall "F series" gearboxes, Ford/FFD 4x4 transmission)
but Renault have only shocked with pure ineptitude!!!!
