'Under Bonnet' Exhaust!

I got the standard titanium exhaust manifolds and Exup/collector with my 2006 R1 lump, so I thought... why not try and use them!

I did a mock up in the chassis and it appears that I would be able to run these pipes as standard and (with a little pipe trimming after the Exup valve) I should be able to link a big-bore Micron race can transversely and keep everything under the bonnet.

I anticipate that the end-tip of the Micron would exit the body just a couple of MM through a 62mm hole in the sideskin.

I've no Cat worries as it's an engine change to an older and smellier car (X-Flow).

However... would anyone anticipate over-heating issues by keeping it all under the bonnet? I was going to use tape on the exhaust pipes up to the carbon can and I was also going to vent fairly large sections of the side-skins at either side of the engine with mesh.

Any thoughts?

Fumes right into the air stream and into your face???

The Toniq has a couple of silencers mounted between the radiator and the engine, with the pipe coming out the drivers side, just behind front wheel.

That's exactly how I foresee my system Guinness. Thanks for the photo.

I had thought about fumes, but I'm guessing that by having the can low and pointing the pipe exit downwards then the fumes shouldn't bother me too much (I also wear a helmet when I play, so this would help!).

Mercedes SLR has exhaust coming out the front side (about 4 of them!).

Loads of things have then coming out the side (behind driver). I don't see why this should be an SVA issue?

Heat management, and the packaging of the pedal box, both need thought but must be sumountable.

The only other thing is that your engine will end up pretty high. I don't know about the R1 specifically, but generally the headers/manifold/exhaust track under the normal (i.e. un-cut) sump. So you will gain 2 inches for the pipes and then another 1 or so over the sump that you haven't cut down. This is likely to leave the engine pretty high, so a bonnet chop will be very necessary.

Very nice cost saving though.

During the mock-up the pipes were still comfortably above the bottom chassis rail.

Regarding the (possable) fume problem, wouldn't it make more sence to turn the pipe downwards, and not poke it through the side. Just a thought. Ray

what about radiated heat. Won't everything get very hot.

Could cause problems with engine overheating.
