Is it normal (especially when using Redline lightweight shockproof oil) to get a clank when the preload is taken up (ie when you go to apply some power after standing still at a trafficlights etc???

Do most people's diffs get hot in use? I'm assuming they will but, to me, clanking and heat suggests bad news (though I'm probably over-worrying...)....

Alas it was only a trip to get some food for a BBQ tonight but it was still a blat (even if SWMBO tells me to slow down when I go above 40!!!)....

Not only does my diff clank but it also whines like mad. Was fine until I tweaked the Pinto to 160BHP then got suddenly worse

I'm seeing how long it lasts and then will probably put a ATB in.

mine clanks too, being a bec its expected with straight cut gears. it also gets worse when its been used for 30 minutes and gets very hot (the oil thins out?)

just check the oil level and it should be fine.

Mine gives a clank if I'm not smooth with the gear change.

I think it more to do with the fact that we dont use the rubber donut that is normaly fitted to the prop shaft and this absorbs the initial shock of engaging the gear.

without that it is tranfered down the prop to the diff and you get a "clank".

Mine also gets pretty hot but no whines as yet.

they do that, but they don't suddenly smash very often, just leave it and don't worry.
