can anyone tell me what housing this is off? I notice it has a large bung and wonder can I fit an electric fan switch to it.

I don't know what it's off, but you shouldn't have a problem fitting a switch. It is similar to a Fiesta alloy one but taller, so the switch will be well clear of the thermostat.
