Do I need a special tool to tighten the cambelt on an early XE,or can you do it by feel?

I haven't done a belt on an xe for a few years now but I think there's a needle on the tensioner that points to a marking on the back of the tensioner (a marking for new and used). You tighten it with a 5mm allen key and turn the engine over a few times and time it up again and check the tension.

If its ok, start the engine up and run for a min or 2. Then stop the engine, time up and check the mark again.

no tool required, tighten the offcentre/cam type tensioner pulley and check tension by twisting the belt. pretty sure the haynes tells you how much it should twist by when under correct tension. just about 80-90 degrees from memory but i could be wrong.
