I have a problem with my speedo drive, it started off when I fitted a replacement smiths type speedo that had siezed in storeage.I put the speedo in assuming it was working but when I tried the car it would not operate ,I then found the input shaft had siezed so freeded it off and made the speedo operational, however it still wont work when installed in the car.
Now it seems that the cable is not rotating when removed from the speedo so i assume it has damaged the drive in the gearbox .
In the past i have found the cable normally snaps in such cases bot it shows no sign of damage so must have damaged the drive gear in the box.

jack up one rear wheel, stick something into the speedo drive hole and turn the wheel - the thng you've stuck should turn as well.


if not, then it is broke - according to manual the drive is pressed it so sounds like it will be fun to repoace.

Might be worth checking the driven part of the speedo drive before stripping the tail housing off ? Could save a lot of work

Found the problem, I removed a drivegear from my spare box and found the speedo is driven by a plastic spindle.I then jacked the car up and removed the speedo outer cable with a struggle as I couldnt get the circlip out, the spindle was rotating when I tried the car in gear and I found the square hole that drives the cable was damaged at the entrance of it.After forcing the inner cable in and replacing the outer it worked again which was good as it would be impossible to remove the drive gear with the box in the car.
