Remote Gear lever
For many builds people use a mechanism to move the gear lever rearwards.
My question is in fitting these do people remove the insert on the rear of the type 9 gearbox or do they purely drill this to provide the necessary
access.

Depends on the type of gearshift extension - the westfield type just requires the removal of the original gearstick, the extension is located and
bolted on, then the gearstick is remounted on the other end. This is the simplest kind to fit.
I designed one a bit different (follow the www link below, and look for 'special parts' ) where you do have to drill through the rear
cover plate. I reckon my design's a bit more positive in action - but it does require a little bit of gearbox modification (not a great deal)
and does require a lathe to make it.

i fitted the one from westfield and it required the removal of the plate

Be a bit careful as you may need a smaller front UJ yolk on the propshaft to clear the back of the extension.

I made mine following Davids link, drilled a hole in the plate. Works a treat, clears the prop UJ and was cheap (£0.91)

Yes - it is close - but mine clears the UJ ok.
There's an added bonus with mine - it becomes a quickshift as well!

Thanks for the info Mine does clear the prop ok so no problem there.
Gavin a word of warning. I started making it to the standard drawings that are around here and then realised that I needed to customise it. The size
is dependant upon where you want the lever and where your engine sits. So its not necessarily as easy as geting somebody to make up one.
