Final Drive and Differential?
I know what the diff is (obviously) but i need to describe a final drive.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Nothing really, though I would say that final drive is a more generic term and applies to bikes for instance too, where their final drive is the chain and two sprockets

Final Drive -

Definition: The reduction ratio, found in the gearset of a drivetrain, that is furthest removed from the engine. Typically, the differential ratio.

as mr W says, to me final drive refers more to the reduction in the diff, whereas diff refers to the actually mechanism for letting wheels spin seperately.

think of go cart with solid axle - no diff so final dive is the gear and axle.
