Any thoughts on these engines?

NISSAN 200 SX 2.0 16V ENGINE (SR20DET)

This is the all alloy turbo engine fitted to some 200sx’s. I'm thinking of using one for a midi project, either a kit or scratch build.

My thinking being that I’ll get 200+bhp out of the box with much more easily available, I get Nissan reliability, sub £1000 gets me a low milag motor with all ancillaries, not sure about weight but being the alloy version should be a little lighter than some other options.

Compared to a Ford Duratec, this would be similar to slightly less money but need to start spending to get anything close in bhp

or another thought was the Honda S2000 slightly more expensive for similar standard power, regarded as being tall/heavy and more limited for future tunning

Transaxle wise I will use a Renault 21 and make an adaptor plate. The path of least resistance might yet be a VAG 1.8T with matching A4 box

Anyway the above are my thoughts based on my limited experience anyone got any other thoughts on these options?

You may like to think about how you're going to drive the car before choosing engines as the SR20 and the VAG 1.8T are obviously both turbocharged engines and therefore have bags of low down torque, On the other hand the other 2 engines are both high reving engines with good top end power.

For track use you may want a high reving screamer of an engine, I'd have the Honda VTEC.

For road use you may decide that the Jap performance and reliability of the SR20 matched with the low down torque of the turbo may closer match your driving style.

What about the Saab 2.3 and use the PPC mag article (They are putting one in a Ford escort).
They are looking at 400BHP on stock internals with just a turbo and some refueling/mapping.

I suppose it depends on how much power / torque you really need.

Worth a thought?

as said above, you need to make the turbo or not turbo decision first.

You cannot compare the power between then directly when they are fitted in "most" lighter cars (i know the obvious, but speak from experience)

I personally also really don't like the turbo driving experience.

Try some other peoples cars before you commit to anything, and don't just compare figures on paper, other than lap times if you're buying a racer!

ps, for a midi the audi route, despite turbo, is pretty good as the gearbox etc is good, and the renault is absolute crap.

Also, if thinking midi, don't forget transverse installations, plenty of nice transverse v6's with gearbox already there all done for you, and the weight distribution is the same within 1 or 2% as a longitudinal mid arrangement

nissan almera gti's have 2lt SR20 engines just without the turbo, they have 150 BHP. not as common as 200sx engines but you can pick up a working gti for 1k and sell the bits you don't need.

I think that would make a pretty good midi powerplant, and they are cheap with a strong gearbox, good option!
