If you also include the sale of your kidneys, you could use this as a donor, a real tarmac scorcher

Keep an eye on the S2000 engine... they don't always go for big money (and it is post Xmas, so there will be less interested).

A word of warning though! There are a LOT of scammers using desirable engines as bait at the moment (s2000 and RS4 are 2 of the favourites). Make sure that they take PayPal for any deposits / final payments!

If they start going on about paying by 'Square Deal', etc. then walk away... quickly!

I will, and if it settles at or below the £1500 mark then ill take it and generate the cash to fit it separately, worth it for the engine.

Otherwise I think I'll go for the c20xe as it could be converted in future to a turbo

£1500 By my standard's that's a lot of money....

My `budget` build was -
KLDE 2.5 V6 - £100
Mx5 G/box - £40
Ally for adapter/flywheel - £100
Throttle bodies and bits - £150
Megasquirt and LC1 + sensors = £310
Silicone hose & plug leads = £270

Total = £870

The rest could then be spent down the pub

OK - so if I have to spend all the money , I'll have a KLZE (Jap spec , 200 bhp) , a six speed box , and a paddle clutch - and still have change for a night out

130 at the wheels or flywheel?
Mine is 155bhp at the flywheel and 120 at the wheels. Just a conservative run up on the rollers tho

The S2000 package went for £2100... if it's genuine, then you've missed a bargain!

The red top in the ebay ad. would not have given you anything as it had no exhaust cam so you would have had to factor that in.
I would go for the Zetec,

Having driven a mk3 gti for a couple of years previously, it is a great engine so have never understood why no-body puts it into sevens? - is it coz it's too tall?

Rumour has it VW deliberately limited the output to make the VR6 look better.

The 6A/9A blocks are slightly shorter (can be found in Audis and Corrados, 6A comes with a longitudinal sump but it's v. deep) as is the KR (mk2 golf 16v, only a 1.8 though). You'd have to lose the standard inlet manifolds as they pass over the top adding to the height. They also lean over quite a bit in their usual homes.

As far as I know I was the first person in the UK to run megasquirt on one of these engines, and it made pretty decent power (179bhp at Stealth's RR, 9A block with a KR head all internally as they come from the scrapyard, standard inlet manifold, 4 branch exhaust manifold and fairly pants scorpion exhaust system). I never got it on the rollers after i'd had the head worked on and got it running on bike throttles, but it went like a scalded cat. Certainly sounded fast

If there had been an easier way to attach it to a gearbox back when I was planning my build I would have kept the engine and made it fit, but there wasn't at the time. Even now, the adaptor plates available are silly money for me, maybe worth paying out for if you wanted a big power 1.8T but not for a little old 'valver Cost wise it makes much more sense to go with something tried and tested, XE or zetec are the easy ones really.

Go Jap
2jzgte engine will be about £750 leaving half the budget to get it running.
its got 321BHP if its a uk engine and 280 i think if its JDM
its got to be worth it even if it costs alittle more than 1.5K... if at a later date you want more power they can take 800-900 BHP if you have the cash to burn

I would go XE, but then I am biased as that's what i have in mine, and have raced with for years etc etc.

£1500 will net you around 200hp and fitted in the car, as long as you do most of it yourself.

Have to say, if i were building something now, (though probably not a locost) the Volvo option makes a lot of sense.
