Leaky silicon hoses

How loose fitting are hose joiners for silicon hoses supposed to be? I got some "28mm" connectors to connect together my 28mm samco hoses and they slipped in awfully easily (there was probably 5mm gap all round). Not suprisingly, just been for a blat and found my coolant level had dropped quite dramatically afterwards and the engine bay was wet It wasn't dripping at idle but when I reved it it sprayed a fair bit!!!

Has anyone come across this before? Do different manafactueres have different 28mms???? I think the hose is about 28.5mm ID and the connector is 27.5mm. Enough so that even with the jubilee clamped up tight it leaks like a bastard.... I was worried it might suggest that the coolant is being pressurised but I left the top of the header tank and it still dripped like crazy despite having a depressurised system....

all the hoses i used slid on nicely with a snug fit. are your connectors barbed?

i also used proper silicon hose clamps if that makes any difference.

No, they've got a flange on each end but even that slips easily into the hose...
I might try some proper clamps rather than Jubilee clips yes......

ive had this problem too, with my own alloy pipe work with a run of wekd round the end to create some grip and with some hose joiners which have groves in. In the end i had to use 2 jubilee clips on each end to stop them leaking and they still drip. Im hoping it wil gunk up over time or i will have to smear sealant around them.

Sounds like someone has supplied you the wrong size, the pipes should be a tight push fit, the seal is formed by the clip gripping the pipe just behind the barb, what you describe the barb has no effect.

Have you got a vernier or similar to get some accurate measurements to challenge your supplier?

have you measured the joiner? have they sent you the wrong joiner?

Good question. They're close enough to 28mm to make me think they're not a smaller size but I wonder if they've made it out of an imperial "equivalent" tube that isn't quite 28mm... Certainly I've stuck it in 2 different brands of 28mm silicon and it's way loose in both.... I've measured them with a vernier and the tube is 27.8mm and the flange is a few MM on top of that. IE the flange just about gets to 28mm.....

Sounds like you've got 1 3/32" tube (27.78mm), whereas stock 1 1/8 tube is 28.575mm. Both are probably classed at "28mm"...it'd be okay if it was the other way round!

Ally is generally imperial sizes but joiners should really be turned down from stock to the proper size. This is a common problem where people get their metric and imperial mixed up - and probably originates from where the bits are made. If from China at some point, don't be surprised... I have seen chinese measurements as "2ft and 3mm"

I bought a 3ft length of 1 1/4" tube (told you it was all imperial..) off "the bay" for under a tenner recently - sellers ID was ukroy - to hopefully match my 32mm hoses but i'll be getting a few blobs of weld Tigged on when i've got my lengths sorted to act as the bead rather than paying silly money for a tool (although you make one with a pair of mole grips and a welder in about an hour..)
