XE to T9 friction plate

Would anybody have any information on the friction plate generally used in my engine installation?

My supplier of all the other parts refuses to believe that I should be running the engine on anything other than a paddle clutch with a competition cover (and asking a million pounds for it).

http://www.westfield-sportscars.co.uk/shop/prodtype.asp?PT_ID=77&numRecordPosition=31&ph=&strKeywords=&&strSearchCriteria=

It looks like westfield supply one (on that page) but I have heard mention of using a sierra diesel friction plate. Some say it works fine, others say it wont fit underneath the standard XE cover due to an interfering flange.

Any information or links would be very welcome.

What diameter is the clutch?

I would guess either 220mm or 240mm?

Most plates of the same diameter are interchangeable between covers.

is that still the case when using a gearbox and engine from different manufacturers?

I ask because I am definite that the old vauxhall friction plate cant be used and have been advised that the vauxhall cover should be used in conjuction with a Ford based friction plate.

Even this paddle clutch that hes trying to flog is designed for a Ford.

search on either Ned or NSDev posts on teh topic. They've got the same install as you and i'm convinced neither has paddle clutches.

I do recall one setup does require a little machining somewhere - hence maybe thats why the statement has been made and its been attributed to all clutches.

Old friction plate can't be used as the splines will be wrong. You should just need the correct dia plate with the 1"x23 spline centre.

Nat (NSDEV) will soon tell you exactly what you need....

ahh that makes sense, ill start measuring things later.

I just tried searching Neds posts but considering both him and NSDev have literally 1000s of posts its a bit of a needle in a haystack!

Hopefully this thread will catch either of their eyes.

I'm pretty sure the 2.3 Diesel Sierra, 2.5 Diesel Scorpio clutch plate is the one you want.

Quinton Hazel part QH C1094AF, 232mm diameter. QKT385AF is the complete clutch kit if you can find one cheap (cover is no use though, and not sure if the release bearing is any good in this application either).

Standard friction plate is 228mm diameter.

linky 1

linky 2

Both of these suggest a 240mm diameter, where different friction plates fitted?

I don't know to be honest, I was going by the QH catalogue. Nat (NS Dev) is the man to speak to though.

Some info here on fitting the diesel fricton plate .

http://boardroom.wscc.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=3;t=16874;hl=vx+and+clutch

I used uprated friction and cover plates from SBD. Wanted to get it right first time and knew they would fit together and handle the power . Probably not the cheapest option though !

more info here
http://boardroom.wscc.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=3;t=6714;hl=vx+and+clutch

I didn't go for a paddle clutch though .

second link was very useful.

Looks like I can get a sierra diesel clutch plate for £20ish but then I'll have to spend £65 getting the flywheel professionally skimmed and balanced.

So the westie one might be worth it in the end..

Although all the westie people on the forum seem to deify SBD..who quite frankly are very very much over priced! Yukspeed and Rally and Competition Equipment (RACE) both do XE/type 9 setups at a fraction of the cost!

Hi, looks like I might be a bit late finding this one!

in terms of dimensions, the vauxhall needs approx 228mm diameter friction plate.

I DO use a paddle plate in mine.

I use a standard, but brand new original equipment (LUK) pressure plate (approx £50) together with a Helix 4 paddle metallic, sprung centred friction plate, Helix part number 76-4628.

You can use a standard sierra diesel plate but I believe it needs a slight mod to fit and I'm not sure what that mod is, and more to the point, in my old opel manta (which ok, does weigh a lot more than the locost) i destroyed an uprated helix kevlar reinforced plate in the space of 4000 miles, and have used paddles ever since.

I've got a strange feeling the required friction plate is from something British Leyland - but have heard very good things about Helix. Apparently very good at "bitsa" conversions.

Long live RWD...
