Pinto timing issue...
Any Pinto timing experts help me.
I've always set my timing by "ear"
It's always seemed to run fine...
Anyway..
A friend of mine asked if I wanted to borrow his timing light to set the timing up proppa like.
When I checked it I found the timing was way out.. Poss 20deg before tdc.
So I set it up with the light as per the book. Now it won't tick over or accelerate cleanly.
I've rechecked the timing belt, thats ok
So any idea whats going on?
Cheers David

Sounds fine to me - if its running ok leave it as it is.
I think the books say 14-16 deg but particularly if you are running a different from standard set up then 20 deg may well be fine.
Mine was set by ear by a really good pinto man and when I measured it with a timing light it showed 28 deg of advance!!!
Cheers
Mark

Yep the book says (pre 85) 8deg BTDC (Ron 97) 4deg BTDC (Ron 95) at idle with the vacume disconnected.
I've ended up with mine at 6deg, but it seems much happier at 10 to 20 degrees or so.
Another friend of mine, just sets his by ear. Leaves it to idle then adjusts it until it sounds nice and smooth.

if it was running fine before, just putting the timming back to where it was, my dad tuned my by ear, and it is fantastic wish i could do it.
my is a round a 24 btdc but that is because the vacume is disconnted and bike carbs.

Might be worth checking that the auto advance mechanism in the distributor hasn't siezed resulting in the timing not advancing and also check
the vacuum advance is still working if you are using one.

My pinto has Aldon Dizzy with ignitor fitted and no vacuum, running bike carbs. At idle 1050rpm strobe shows 12 degrees. If I increase the advance to 16
starter struggles to turn engine.Hi torque starter needed or Is my standard one just lazy ?

Did you disconnect the vacuum advance before measuring it? You will get higher values if you don't.

According to the speed pro pinto tuning book, the Pinto engine with electric dizzy is:
12 to 14 deg @ idle of 600 to 800 rpm with the vacuum disconnected & a standard cam.
For a 310 to 320 duration cam, its 18 to 20 deg advance at 1200 to 1400 rpm
Full advance should be 36 to 38 deg at 3300 to 3500 rpm
Coswoth engines should idle at 1200 to 1500 with 18 to 19 degrees of advance. (Sounds like a ruddy bike engine at that idle).
But.. According to the Haynes Book of Lies, its 8 degrees advance with leaded and 4 degrees with unleaded (Thats with the normal ignition system
people use).
