plumbing polo rad to pinto

ok so after deciding it's the way to go for definate i have a question, on my current set up i have the obvous top and bottom hoses but then i have a little hose coming from the radiator to the header tank. i can't see anything like that on the pics of the ones i've been looking at using a polo radiator. do i just blank the inlet off on my header tank now or am i missing something?

My polo rad has the bleed on the top N/s of the rad.

Edit you can just see it at the top of the rad.

As you may have seen from my other posts, I've just done exactly the same. (fitted Polo rad in place of my original Escort unit)

I sourced all hose from CBS and you can see much of the result in my archive under 'New Radiator'
My engine has twin alternator belts so had to be a bit more careful with the bottom hose.
I've connected the Polo bleed to the header tank overflow and the larger header pipe tees in to the bottom hose. Maifold loops to pump.

Unfortunately, the engine still overheated badly so I've had the head off to check everything and refitted it today. Nothing was found to be amiss, which is actually encouraging in a perverse sort of way!
Tomorrow, hopefully, I'll get all the ancillaries reconnected and give it a shot.
Various folk have suggested that my overheating could be due to impeded airflow from the radiator, so I'll probably try a run with the bonnet off, or at least propped open somehow.
Have you been suffering overheating?
John.

haven't had any problems with over heating sinse i managed to get all the air locks out of it but the rad i'm using is custom made which is great keeps everything lovely and cool but to mount it i have to bolt through the cores and with all the vibration etc it just keeps cracking the cores and springing a leak so i'm fed up now and want something a little more simple!

Hose going to the right goes to the little outlet at the top right of the polo rad.The one on the left just in view goes to the little take off on the thermostat at the top.

The inlet without a hose on in this picture is shown better on the last picture as the hose from the bottom of the expansion tanks goes to it.

What are that that you have put in the tops of the inlets to tune the carbs? Sorry for hijacking the thread.

RichardK:
I have the header tank teed to the bottom hose; yours goes to the pump?
And, looking at the 3-way on top of the cam box - does the left hose go to the 'stat? The small stub on my 'stat is blocked (always has been - as removed from donor)
John.

Yes mate, it goes to the thermostat.

Scoop, these may make more sense.

The top picture is just showing the small hex screws with copper washers to seal the hole when not carb balancing.

as some of you know i had horrible probolems with overheating at first with my polo rad...
flak monkey set me on the right track and it was all down to air trapped in the system and me, as usual, doing things slightly different!
my polo rad ahs a triangular tank on one side with a pressure cap on it.... this was letting air into the system!
I blocked off the pressure relief valve in the cap so it is just a solid cap and have had no problems with airlocks since )
I now have the added advantage that i can fill the rad directly and squeeze the hoses unitl i see no air bubbles so i can be sure i have minimised the air in system
a happy coincidence of this is that my rad has no bleed valve aqnd therefore nowhere to take a run off back to the header tank... so i got a perfect T piece off a rover in the scrappy and have my take off coming from the highest point on the hose coming from the top of the head

one thing to check which has been seen repeatedly on this forum is that your fan is working in the right direction, ie it is pulling (or pushing) air through the rad towards the rear...
