exposed flywheel

when i've got my engine and gearbox bolted together, you can see some of the flywheel. is there something i'm missing? should there be something there to cover the flywheel or is this normal?

don't run the car without it as oil mist and dirt will end up coating the clutch friction plate and flywheel

been there

use an bit of alloy sheet to cover the gap, use a bit of card to make the template

easy to make.

Drill the outer holes and bolt to gearbox. Cut arount the gearbox with a nibler. Then you just need to work out what to cut out of the middle.

thats what i expected

cheers guys!

is there anywhere i can buy one already made up? or does anyone have any CAD drawings for one? i'd rather not take my engine out again right now just for this. it will need to come back out right enough, but i could do with getting a few other things done first

Just do it next time you take your engine and 'box out then, it'll only take about 10-15mins to make...

^ ah true enough. the car won't be going anywhere fast before its got a sniff of an IVA...

so, having never really looked at the back of the engine in great detail, does this plate just need to cover the bottom 1/4 of the hole (ie just the exposed bits) or does it really need to be the full diameter of the bellhousing which a big hole cut in the middle for the flywheel etc?

That depends on how you make it. If its sandwiched between box and engine then it needs to be full.

If you fasten it up to the hole with brackets it can be just a little cover.

ah, its a vauxhall x20xev btw

from what i rememeber theres a few holes in the bell housing which don't go to the engine block (not sure why, but i wasn't given any bolts for them either) so i could use those.

was thinking of getting it cut on a waterjet, as i've got a few other bits too

There's a much bigger hole where the clutch arm sticks out, hardly anyone bothers to block that one..

Nuff said??

yeah, i had thought about thsat too, i guess because of the angle its at, things are unlikely to enter it. with a big hole facing forward, grit and stones etc are in dierct firing line of the starter ring on the fly wheel.

You don't normal need to make a full sandwich plate unless the input shaft is engaging too far into the spigot bearing. Just make a small alloy cover the shape of the hole and bolt it on.

that would be awesome! if its not exaclty the same it would be near enough! and since the bellhousing is to fit the vauxhall engine, surely the holes should line up

cheers!
