Zetec oil Capacity shortned sump

Hi all,

Having just bought my Tiger Avon 2lt zetec, I've just changed the oil + filter. It has a shortened sump, but I've no idea if this is a diy job or not.

I've read somewhere that a 2lt zetec can run quite happily with only 3.8 lts of oil. I know Haynes manual says 4.25 lts.

I've put in just under 4 lts (Castrol 5w30 4 lt can). When checking the dipstick, it's over the max mark, but will this just be a standard dipstick?

So my question is do I need to put any more in.

Thanks,
Neil

Still use the dip stick

if you over fill it you are going to run in to problems.

The crank will be running in it and draging. it will froth the oil so you will loose lubrication.

go to far and you will end up with hydraulic lock and bend the rods.

The simple answer is no as the dipstick is a guide so that you dont over fill it and cause the crankshaft to whip the oil up into a froth which you certainly dont want.

sounds like you are over already ... but run engine then leave it before measring oil level to allow filter to fill up.

you need to check you have the right dipstick first - should have ford part no., stamped - for the engine and there are no modifications to where it fits to the engine i.e. it sits at the same level.

then use the dipstick as the mark - too much and the crank will throw the oil and aerate it i.e. put ickle bubbles which is not good for bearings.

blimey you gotta be quick on here - why arenlt you out driving in the glorious sun instead of posting on here!!

As a matter of interest does any know the distance between the bottom of block and crankshaft webs lowest point of both a Pinto and a Zetec as this could possibly help when sorting out dipstick lengths.

I'm running an 1800 zetec with a tiger ERA short sump, with a very short oil filter i have 3,25 litres of oil.

The tiger sump is very shallow and now makes the lowest point of the car the bellhouse on the gearbox by 1"+

I think it will depend on your sump,is the sump a home mod or factory made ?

As above - keep using the standard dipstick mark. As mentioned - frothy oil will soon mean dead engine so dont risk over-filling. The problem with less oil is that it will warm up that much quicker, so you may want to consider fitting an oil cooler at some stage if you see low oil pressure or really high temps. This will also give you a bit of an increase in capacity as well as cooling the oil.

Thanks for the speedy replies. Looks like I'll have to empty some oil out tomorrow. I think I've got about a half a litre to much in.

As for the sump being home mod or pro job, I've no idea but it looks a very good job.

I always thought that the oil capacity would not change even with a modified sump, I thought the engine required the given amount to operate and any less it would seize.

There you have it, you learn something new every day.

Cheers,
Neil
