Bellhousing cut & shut?

Toyota W58 box sitting on my garage floor is dying to get behind the St170.

Problem is the bellhousing, Toyota one is quite short and so is the input shaft. Bellhousing is alloy.

I have a number of Ford FWD boxes that are in bits while I tried to figure this one out but the front part of the FWD boxes is the same length as type 9... too long.

So, is it possible to cut and shut the Toyota housing with the Ford one?

How hard is it (alignment) and who can do it?

Steve

Im doing a bmw to volvo oe just now.

Ive measure the total lengths and checked clutch operation, release bearing etc and cut down both bellhousing sections. Im going to get the skimmed flat true to the divide in the box casing, and the bellhousing mating face.

The intention is then to bolt one section the the engine and weld a 6mm plate to it, then fit the reassembled geabox, use the input shaft and spigot bearing to align it and weld it on.

Time will tell if it works!

Aye, its the alignment I am worried about. I think using a fwd box that already has a small hole for the input shaft should line it up OK, plus the Fwd clutch fork is much more compact than the rwd one.

I'm going to have butchers at it this afternoon then maybe farm it out to a machine shop to keep it all square and welded...

Im basically going to have a ring on the engine with a plate welded to it, nd then the flat front of the box sat on that (ensuring the input shaft and clutch plate are perpendicular in two dimensions)

then the input shaft will sit int he spigot bearing ensuring its concentric. The only issue is the play in th input shaft bearings, but ill move it fully in each direction in turn and mark the extent and then tack it in th middle

Im getting a friend to skim the bots for me, and another mate to tig it up once I have tacked it.
