Enthusiast Engine Build Classes

Gents.... does anyone state-side know of an enthusiast class where they teach welding, engine building, etc...

I have torn google up and down looking for anything in the south eastern part of the US but found nothing. They have the dedicated technical shools where I become a certified mechanic after 2 years and pay 30,000 bucks. A bit more than what I'm really wanting.

I just want a bit of instruction so I don't ruin a perfectly good engine or good pieces of metal with my horrific welding skills.

Any tips besides "trial & error"?

I'm not scared!!! I'm just marking my territory.

What about volunteering at a youth project, college or a club or something?
