Type 9 - removing 5th gear nut

L&G,
I have one stumbling block on the way to stripping the gearbox and that is getting the 5th gear retaining nut off the back end of the layshaft.
I've unstaked it but it's not budging. I'm thinking of a couple of bits of Dural with a series of skew holes chain-drilled to match the gear's radius and tooth pitch, these pieces then secured using the tail-housing bolts.
Any other proven methods of doing this?
I have to get the layshaft out as I've disturbed the needle rollers at its front end.
Thx in advance!
John.

Take the selector forks off, then slide the baulk rings to select 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th which will lock the box solid.

Then put a socket the right size on the nut with a long breaker bar. Hold the box steady and give the bar a clonk with a big hammer.

All the ones I have done have come undone pretty easy.

Good thinking, David!
So obvious once the solution is presented!

Done!
Thank you, David, and good luck with your new venture.

Last time I had a gearbox apart was a 103E/E93A 3-speed about 35 years ago!

Tell a lie - broken layshaft on LR LtWt V8 about 1983.
Cheers,
John.
