Vauxhall Engine????
I have a 1990 astra gte 2.0 8value. I want to know if possible to use this as my donor engine in a mk indy. Also I am thinking of getting a vauxhall
F20 6-speed gear box, re-engineered for front wheel drive from 4-wheel drive. Anybody have any thoughts or advice????????

Adam,
Bit confused - why would you want to re-engineer a four wheel drive box for front wheel drive, to put in a rear wheel drive Indy?
Apart from that, I believe other postings on this site have made reference to the Carlton box being a straight fit (to engine) - hopefully others will
confirm or otherwise.

But the Vauxhall 4x4 gearbox is for a transverse engine, isn't it? Would have trouble fitting a transverse engine and box in a locost.
Hmmm, going off on a slight tangent - why doesn't anybody get a FWD engine/box, weld up the diff, turn it 90 degrees and bodge the n/s driveshaft
into a propshaft?
It would look like an oversized bike engine installation.

Edit: Duuuuur - armadillo. You'd need a 1:1 rear diff. Oh well.

is that the only way to get a fwd engine powering a rwd setup.
Also, been looking at tuning the engine. Thought of boreing out to 2.2l, kent cam, throttle bodies etc. And the best, a turbo conversion. All of this
would boost the bhp by around +80bhp. Which makes it around 200bhp'ish!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anybody know anything about rotatary engines???? like the Aussies have!

It's not just the Aussies who have Wankel engines.
Any country that has Mazda (had NSU) will have Wankels. Norton even put them in their bikes on a regular basis, till they went bust (which they also
do regularly!!). Also OS (Japanese model engine manufacturer) do one - but it's only about 15cc - so not a lot of use!!
They're quite compact, can produce lots of power, matched by a massive thirst for fuel. Norton engines were total loss lubrication, don't know about
Mazda - suggest you do a search as you may find specialised sites - possibly more knowledgeable that you may find here.
Never know, might be a Wankel expert here:-)

Just been offered a cheap xr4i.. lovely stuff

Nope, you just need to fit it to a RWD gearbox. Carlton/senator box might bolt straight on, or you can fit any RWD box you like if you can find/make
an adaptor plate/bellhousing.
XR4i - now you're talking. Proper number of cylinders. I'm using an XR4x4 for my Locost. Heavy engine, the 2.8, but nice and strong. Very high
too - will poke out of the bonnet and look like an American hot rod or something. All that torque but no LSD in the XR4i though.
Dunno much about rotaries though. Inefficient and unreliable I've heard...but so what they're cool.

i am using a 2l 16v vaux engine which uses the same block as the 2l/1.8 ohc.
all you need is a box from a 1.8 carlton and it directly bolts up. all that i need to do now is find the correct clutch plate and release bearing.

If anyones interested, I have a Manta box just taking up space, problem is it's a GT/E box and apparently has the starter on the wrong side. A better
bet is the 1.8 box from a GT/J, Berlinetta, or 1.8 Exclusive. BTW it's the same box as a 3 series BMW made by Getrag.

Er, I still have a Getrag Manta box for sale! It's all alloy, it has a quickshift gearchange mechanism, and there's a very light flywheel to go
with it.
I even have a inline 1.8 GT/J alloy sump, pick up pipe and alloy engine mountings that fit any of the 1.6/1.8/2.0 transverse fours!
