Red top tuning
I've got a red top in my Manta at the moment, but would like some more power out of it.
Currenlty it's running uprated cams (no idea what), a group n chip, aftermarket exhaust and a sports throttle body. (all taken from what the
previous owner told me).
I was thinking maybe a set of bike throttle bodies and a new ecu would free up a bit more power, I think it's around 180bhp at the mo.
Any suggestions? oh and I haven't got too much money to throw at it
You couldn't pwn your way out of a wet paper bag, with "PWN ME!!" written on it, from the "pwned take-away" which originally contained one
portion of chicken tikka pwnsala and the obligatory free pwnpadom.

As it's in a Manta, I'm guessing it's running std injection system?
When I was running my old Calibra, I had an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, full stainless exhaust, courtney sport power cap (replaces the sfi box
on top of the throttle body), K&N panel filter, reprofiled cams and a few other little bits.
I would say that unless you're positive the cams arer uprated, check them out. It's a common thing to say they've been changed, but
with no actual proof. Same goes for the ECU chip; plenty of piggy-back items and phoney ones, if it's even been touched. I had a superchips
ECU, and they put a tamperproof label across the join, so it can't be tampered with.
If you want to stick with std injection, look at the fuelling and injectors as a start, linked with plugs/leads etc. The powercap/top hat makes
things smoother, but only marginal gains. DON'T use an open induction kit, as it will idle badly, and drive like a pig - consider looking at
something like a BMC enclosed carbon air filter and cold air feed, and porting/polishing the head.
Also, if using the std throttle body, some people tried removing the double butterfly, but i've ever tried this so can't comment.
If you've got the money, you could go the route of dry sump, 1mm overbore, but i'd have a look at off-the-shelf items before stretching
that far.
Or, as a change of direction, rip everything off, and stick a set of weber 45's or 48's on there. I've seen it done on stock cars
and at the shows, so know it can work.
Before now i'd never have considered using bike carbs, but there is also that route, although you'll have to ask someone else on here what
they've done as i'm not up to speed with that as yet!!!

I know sweet fa about vx lumps tbh.
Top hat? wazzat? lol
Engine bay looks like this atm
It's got a rather lumpy idle, but picks up nicely about 4k and gives you a bit of a kick in the back.
Power delivery is totaly different to the astra gte I had for a while with the same engine.
The last owner had no real reason to tell porkies as it wasn't advertised with any of the engine mods, he had a dyno printout showing 169 bhp
before fitting of full stainless exhaust and group n chip)
It already flies, and is still pulling strong after the speedo runs out at 130mph (wussed out after that), but you always crave more power after
you've got used to a car don't you? lol
The SDB kits seem rather expensive, i'm sure there is a cheaper way of squeezing some more power out of the engine.
