Mini a series - bike carbs and MJLJ

Done some limited research --dont see many cars with our now std concversion. Is there a valid reason why its not done on a series engined cars or is it probs cos mini owners havent joined the 21st century yet? Im pretty sure 2 off carbs will be a great mod (half a bank). Not sure if bike carbs will be any better than SU's though - and poss not any cheaper.

Way back in the day the ex bikers used to fit twin Amal monoblock carbs to Sprites/Migets and they where A series engines, i prefered the SU's on mine as once sorted i could get well over 45mpg on a long run from Chatham to Grimsby and with the odd challenge from other owners on the way too but they never got the better of me and my sister on that run in my MK1 Sprite .

Also in the 60s BMC sold special tuneing manuals for the Sprite/Migets , i still have mine somewhere and i rebuilt my engine useing the info gleaned from it and thats why my Sprite was quite quick and thrashed the bigger engined models,
948cc, twin 1 1/8 SU's.

There have been a number of people with A-series minis showing off their work on the Autosport Labs website - might be worth a look.

This thread, for example.

Because of the siamesed ports you get a lot of odd effects on A & B series engines.

Surprisingly when the Metro was launched with the A+ it was discovered for road use at least the single SU carb manifold from the MG Metro could give more power and more even mixture distribution than that than any of the exotic carbs ( DCOE's cut in half, Amal carbs and the legendary Reece-Fish or Minnow-Fish carbs) that were being used on Minis at the time.

Interestingly from Germany you can obtain a customised version of the Megasquirt ECU intended as a plug compatible replacement for the MEMS single point injection system in the last real Minis.

I believe that is correct - again this subject was posted on, maybe in the last couple of months.

searching will reveal all.

Or, from Scunthorpe you can get CANEMS which is a development of the Megasquirt that uses customised injector timing to remove the mixture bias when running with port injection, much like the MEMS system did but obviously far easier to re-map.

The megajolt conversion is becoming quite popular on the A-series, less so bike carbs as the twin SU setup is relatively cheap to begin with.

What engine spec you got planned? You can run pretty silly power on a well set up single su tbh and still run mj for a more reliable ignition.
If your going beyond a single carb then start saving up for you gearbox, diff and transfer gears now as you can mince them pretty easily!
As for BMW heads specialist components sell a how too guide thats really informative, they also sell kits.
Have you considered an engine swap? Im using a micra engine, 1275 all ally, twin cam, 16v, injection and 5speed box. Weighs less than the a series, more reliable and fits without body mods.
