Oh Poo What Now

Just getting gearbox tarted up ready to fit after rebuilding the engine. I took top cover off box just to check that there was no rusty gears as it has been stood for 18 month since I bought it.
The cover has a small spring and ball bearing that presses onto selector shaft.

Problem is when I come to refit the cover I noticed there was no spring

Now I am not sure if there was one there in the first place, I had to tap the cover to get it off and it did seem to spring but I that might just be in my head as I doubt the spring is strong enough to lift the cover.

I have filled the box with degreaser just in case the spring was sticking to the inside due to the oil, I have had it upside down tapping the casing while spinning the shafts, nothing has fallen out and I cannot see anything inside.
I have prodded as much as I can with welding rods still nothing. I have checked the bench & the floor ..... no sign of it.

So what next

Strip the box........
or
Fit new spring and fit the box......

Check your left nostril you'd be amazed were springs can fly to!

I would press on regardless and see what happens. I am sure it will all be ok.

I have a really strong small magnet and thought that it would be a good idea to poke that in on a stick but its a steel case so it just stuck to the side

Its a Ford C type ??

Old Cortina box not a type 9

Just blasted it with 70LBs of air pressure with a blow off gun. Still no sign of the pesky thing.

you've given it every chance to come out, i don't think its in there.

is it difficult to get a new replacement box if yours breaks?

Hi

The box has a strong magnet in the base as standard. if the spring is in there it is well and truly stuck to the magnet.

The answer is to get a replacement spring and refit.

Cheers Matt

Thanx to everyone who replied

This engine, box, prop & axle came with the part build and I intend to change things when SVA out of the way so as long as it drives to testing station and back that will do.
So I have fitted new spring, put the lid back on and forgoten about it........

Some finishing off in the engine bay then it can all go back in for its first start....
