though this is a big engine the principle of the header tank is the same
the small hose is an overflow or depending on the cap fitted can go into an unpressurized reservoir bottle

ah, that makes sense. so is it as simple as the bottom radiator hose goes to the top of the header, and the top rad hose to the bottom hose of the
header (or the other way round? )
i've got a small outlet on the top of the radiator too. maybe its not a header but an expansion tank i need?

If you have a radiator cap and it’s higher than the engine. You just need a un-pressurized bottle to hold spare coolant that is drawn back into the
engine when it cools down and the coolant shrinks. If the engine is too high relative to the radiator for getting air out etc then you can fit a non
venting radiator cap and either one of those header tanks or an in line pressure cap and expansion bottle outlet, like the type below higher up in the
system. Car builder solutions also sell them. Make sure the pressure cap is the right type.

yeah just stick a bit of hose on it and block it with a bolt and clip etc
do change the radiators cap to one that has no spring, i.e. just a rubber gasket
linky to CBS site for the inline thing

the radiator i've got doesn't have a cap on it, so i should be fine on that.

Bottom Rad hose goes to the bottom of the header, the top hose / stat housing goes to the top of the header tank to bleed any air away.
