The ECU monsters are out to get me
Evenin all,
I've had a post running in the Mods thread about a possible winter engine change and from one of the suggestions I'm quite taken with the
idea of an ST170.
Now the oily bits I'm quite happy with but engine management scares me to death. Once a new engines in and all hooked up to gearbox, cooling and
fuel supply etc., in plain English what's involved in actually making an ST170 'go', dizzies and points are simple enough even for
me (or maybe I'm simple enough for them!) but engine management I've no experience with. How difficult is it?

Get your self Dave Walkers book on engine management, well written in simple to understand language and available in decent car accessory shops .
Dave's company (Emerald) are based in Norfolk and supply ECUs with good back up. Also operates a rolling road for final set up.

you could run it on a basic carb set up with an ignition module & dizzy etc, but i think the best option if you just wanted to run carbs would be
to megajolt it. a simple install of a 36-1 wheel and sensor & coil pack would get a good enough result.
or
you could go the hole hog and set it up on bike throttle bodies and megasquirt, you would need to get a manifold made, fit a high pressure fuel pump
& filter, 36-1 trigger wheel and fuel pressure regulator. then you would have to install the Megasquirt unit, including water temperature sensor,
air intake sensor, and either a throttle position sensor or MAP sensor. (then you obviously have to set up the MS software which is a bit more tricky
)

p.s i think coozer on here has an st170 set up on bike carbs, might be worth a u2u

i was toying with this engine for my fury.am i right in thinking this comes with a dual stage inlet in stock form, with variable valve timing?
i'm assuming most after market ecus would not be setup for vvt input? and therefore reversion to a normal 16v twin cam timing would be needed.
would this be difficult/time consuming.

Now I know you're going to nudge the person next to you and say 'look what he just asked' but I'm going to ask it anyway. When
you're taking a car from a modern donor like an ST170 why don't you take all of the engine managementy bits with it and transplant the
lot, I mean it worked in the donor why wouldn't it work in the kit, I realise it obviously doesn't or everyone would do that but why
doesn't it. Sorry if I've made you spill your beer.

it can be done and is done, but by scrapping the stock inlet system you can have better air flow into the engine, and therefore u need after market
management as the standard ecu wouldn't cope. I've heard it said the st170 head has great flow characteristics and without the restrictive
air box and inlet system i would think would be a very hot n/a engine for a 2lt.

Coozer is running the VVT on an output from megasquirt.

just done this
i have just swapped a 2lt silvertop on carbs for an st170 in my westy
going the full efi was a little daunting at first but after a lot of patience and research it was quite easy
and im no mechanic by any stretch of the word
the zetec exhaust manifold fits straight on no problem
you can use the zetec 1.8 flywheel 6kgs
a mondeo 2ltr clutch the zetec starter lrs207 fits but you need to modify the st bellhousing as it fits the opposite side than original starter
a zetec/ mondeo coilpack and leads or st one if you have it,
modify and baffle the oil sump for ground clearance,
make and fit an idler pulley for waterpump
you can get a kit from raceline for the idler but at £90 for a bracket and pulley it was easier to make one for nowt
fit return fuel line to fuel tank, modify existing tank by adding a swirl pot to the bottom and adding a new return inlet for return feed
new h/p fuel pump and h/p fuel filter
either a set of bike throttle bobbies or if youre lucky a decent set of jenveys
you will then need an ecu that can run the vvt i've gone for emerald as its the easiest solution for me a few plugs to the injectors,
coil, crank sensor, fan control a couple of relays to protect the ecu from fuel pump and fan and your there
started her up last week for the first time and was over the moon
just needs a little tuning and were ready for the road
